My 2011 pre runner 2.7 engine needs to be replaced/rebuilt.

Had top end done due to head gasket leak. Work done at dealership. They recommend replacement but I took a gamble.

Now its burning oil (a lot)

    Probably best to replace

Any recommendations on shops or engine suppliers in SoCal?

    Thank you in advance

Diesel baby! The TFL truck guys had a Tacoma with a diesel on the show and it was slick.

I'm in the same boat. I need to get a camera down in the cylinders to see what the walls look like.

At a minimum I need rings, but it might need to be bored over and get some bigger pistons. I need to price this option. If I go this route, I'll be putting a turbo on the truck.

But I might just buy a low mileage replacement engine. This runs the risks of the same thing happening in the future again unfortunately.

But for 260k miles I'm happy. I've put on 50k since I bought it a year ago.

They also want like $30k to do the conversion.

the dude they featured in that video was close to $60k into a basic SR5 Tacoma.

Thanks for the input thus far ( aside from Diesel suggestions lol). I have no complaints either considering I've got over 230k on this motor it owes me nothing. Was just hoping there was a good go to for new or re manufactured engines.

I may be in the same boat. I’m definitely interested in what engines will bolt to the stock trans. It’s a shame you can’t adapt a 4.3V6 to them like you could on the old pickups.

Since this particular truck doesn’t have to be street legal, I’d be fine sticking a 22R in the thing if it would work without a trans swap.

Personally, I would go with a used low mileage OEM engine versus rebuilt.

Is it common for a blown head gasket in these engines to result in total replacement?

My 2005 just past 400k miles. Had to replace head gasket at 355k miles to headgasket leak. Just plum wore out. Never overheated. Ran great actually but oil got into the coolant. Runs great now after resurfacing head and new gasket. Only used all genuine Toyota part for every seal. Cheap insurance. Doesnt burn anymore oil after replacing the valve stem seals. I have a spare 2.7L engine in my garage that has 32k miles on it. I am ready to replace when the old engine does.

Good news to me! I ran into a pole in a parking lot while texting(dumb) a few weeks after I bought mine with 500 miles on it. As a result, I mounted the new with slight tweak on it. Gave me zero trouble for eight years when one day it got hot and I found that the radiator had a slight crack where the mount had it tweaked. Fixed that up and put a new radiator on. A year later I pulled up at a gas station and had steam coming out of the truck. The lower radiator hose was blown off, but temp gauge read normal. Put it back on, added coolant, no issues that I was aware of for another year, but I also acquired another Tacoma and so it has been driven very little since that time, and is now only used for hunting. Two weeks ago the hose blew off again, also with a temp gauge reading normal. This time however, when adding coolant steam shot out the radiator fill cap, and the truck will no longer start. Compression test shows only 35psi and putting air into cylinders at TDC leaks straight into the radiator. If the cylinders look good after removing the head, the plan was to have the head resurfaced and replace the gasket, but it seems like most threads I find about replacing the head gasket result in a lot of replacement talk... This engine is obviously a lot more complicated than my 22-RE was.

I wish I had a spare in my garage!
