More for California - check out Ventura in between L.A. and Santa Barbara, cool beach town and also a big kite surfing spot to boot.

Also northern L.A., Santa Clarita area is equidistant from the sea and mountains. It's the same driving distance from the Sierra to the sea, and easy access to downtown L.A. for culture.

If you can swing it, San Luis Obispo and Arroyo Grande on the Central Coast are stunningly beautiful places to live, and Pismo is a super chill beach town.

yes it is. He has a historic home though so no property taxes which is a nice incentive. Only two of us kids so it’s a “how much sugar do I have to throw at my sister” sort of question. Really hard to do the math from where we are right now, so many variables.

I also used to live up near the old mining town of Nevada City up in the Gold Country of northern California in the Sierra foothills. BEAUTIFUL country, more 'acreage property' up there. Super cool town, and Grass Valley and Auburn wasn't far which had more modern amenities (i.e. drugstores, Target, etc.). Nice people up there.

We missed the beach and city-life though, although getting snow was fun. Turns out we're more cosmopolitan I guess, ha. :proposetoast:

Theres a lot of open land in Cali if thats what youre reffering to, but I just wouldnt move to Cali to raise a family even though you want to aspire to something better in the end bad people tear down neighborhoods

I recommend you start looking at taxes to eliminate states that are going to rape you coming and going. For example, if you decide on Lake Tahoe, then live over on the Nevada side near Reno. Massive CA taxes & regulations vs no income tax and far less restrictions...not a tough decision

There are a lot of really neat towns in this country, so avoid the crappy ones!

Examples of neat towns in the west: Rapid City, SD, Steamboat Springs, CO, burbs of SLC, Utah especially if you like to ski, Fort Collins, CO... A lot of people moving to Texas... As several have mentioned, the southeast area of the US is a growing area. Plenty of beaches & mountains, and many within a reasonable drive to both.

I would also avoid any towns where the police let rioting go on for days, weeks, or even months (Portland, OR). If the elected officials allow this, they don't give a crap about your safety. I would also extend that to any city that has defunded their police departments. Sad but true...

True, you couldn’t give me a free house to live in if it were in Portland or Seattle
