I’m going to be moving to Oahu next month. Not sure how long I’ll be staying. 3 months minimum, but could be 6 months to a year. Wondering if anyone has info on shipping a Tacoma from Southern California? Also curious to hear Tacoma world’s thoughts if I should buy a beater instead or spend the cash to ship it. Mahalo!

Also searched this text on Google: "cost of shipping vehicle from california to hawaii" and it provided a list of vendors.

What are you doing in Oahu? I spent 5 weeks there without a car. I managed ok riding the bus. I was staying in Waikiki but commuted over to Kalihi and Waipahu. Even Waimanalo a few times. Then around the entire island from there, but we had a work car once I got to the original destination.

I sent my truck out of LBC using matson but got a cheaper price using a moving company since they get different pricing versus consumers. They either go out Matson or Pasha. If you need to send a lot of things/ heavy or bulky / hazardous items you can forward the items at Triple
B forwarders which is in Carson.

In your situation, I’d just get a beater, considering your relatively short stay in Hawaii.

Is your truck lifted/modified? Oahu has a requirement for modified vehicles called “recon” and unfortunately it can be a pain. You’d need to make an appointment with the inspection station. They’d inspect your truck and if it meets their guidelines, they would issue you a sticker to put on your rear bumper. If they fail you, you’d need to change/remove whatever it is they failed you on and reinspect. Just something to consider.

What kind of "guidelines" are you talking about here? I'm only asking out curiosity. I'm just guessing a lot of these are "environmental concerns."

One of the guidelines that pop into mind is that tires can’t stick out past the fender without a fender flare extension. Some others include no HID type headlights, lifts can’t legally exceed a certain height. Stuff like that.

check out this thread for more info on recon: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/hawaii-recon-information-q-a-thread.99156/

I'm a sailor for Matson and the company is still shipping vehicles. Usually takes 4 days to arrive from Oakland to Honolulu.

Do you know about how much it would cost to ship my Taco to Oakland? I'm sure I could use the website but I'm being lazy haha.

I checked shipping mine a month ago From Oakland to Hono. It was $2K, so I imagine the same in the other direction.

Driveshaft disconnect to be flat towed behind our RV.
Back in the 90s I was stationed on Oahu for 3 years. I shipped my Ford Ranger 4x4 truck over and drive it for 30,000 miles. At the end of my tour I sold it in Hawaii for $6000 more than I bought it for in IL.

Trucks are popular on Oahu, you should be able to ship it over and sell it when you leave for a profit.
