The largest caliber they are comfortable shooting without being "afraid" of it. My now-wife went shooting before me and was not given training or a gun she was comfortable with. She was scared and didn't want to shoot again. Until I baby stepped her through the process starting with a .22. That's what she is comfortable shooting at the range for now. Had her try my Sig P226 in 9mm, she didn't like it. I would rather her carry a .22 that she is comfortable with than a 9/38/45/bazooka that she is scared of and would hesitate to use.

If she's worried about recoil, try getting her into a "all steel" 9mm pistol. That should have enough mass to not be too bad. Frankly I'm a little surprised she didn't like shooting your 226. Was it the recoil? Was it too large for her hands? If she still doesn't like 9mm pistols, maybe a 380 would be OK. I definitely wouldn't go smaller for a self defense round.

Just because you're not doesn't mean she isn't. She will certainly have an easier time managing recoil from a 9mm versus a .357.

    Mostly dust and dirt.
On the other hand she could use .38 +p.

I shoot often and I'm seeing more women comfortable with the following handguns. None of these will break the bank.

    Glock 43/43X
    Glock 19
    Sig P365
    Springfield Armory XDM (Compact)
    Sig P238
    Sig P938
S&W J Frame (Most can't shoot it correctly and lacks high capacity.)

shooting as a sport..............im not walkin down range to stand in front of ANY shooter/gun

then there are those that endlessly attempt to Impress the person they are intending to shoot/kill

with all the marketing glittery device known to man

if anyone.......that includes any woman understands lethality in that moment

the decision is made to Defend & Protect

    the Starbux conversation is pointless

any individual should be taught competent skills in lethality

We have three Roger LCP's which seems to be the most carried concealed pistol. The LCP 2 has a much improved trigger so if going that route get the 2. Now this pistol is not fun to shoot being so small but it disappears in my pocket with a pocket holster, often forget it's there.

The 380 isn't going to knock anyone down but the gun you have with you is always better than the gun you left at home. You want to carry the most powerful pistol you will actually have with you. A six inch 357 is nasty but how many people pack one on a daily basis.

I bought my wife a couple different 9mm but the mag spring was just to strong for her wrists so I ended up with a S&W Lady Smith 5 shot 38. She loves it.

For me the bigger question is to make sure the female wanting to carry is completely comfortable and has the mindset of that without question is ok with shooting a person/killing and the consequences that may arise from that action.

i would take her out with a few tennis balls

insist that she be proficient left & right handed

that she have a strong grip both hands

i never like the pistol grip safety in that is after a scuffle

or wounded .......................does one have enuf grip to fire ??!?!?!?!?!

whereby on many pistols........simply pull the trigger

My suggestion is to take her to a range and let her try different styles and calibers of firearms. Just as with men, different women like different things in firearms.

If she's never shot before, suggest that she try a .22LR pistol to get used to handing a firearm.

    if my wife......girlfriend.....daughter E V E R needed to pickup a firearm in defense

id want her to have skills yet know the fullest extent of LETHALITY !!

not hypothetical scenarios whereby she might persuade/talk the perp to death

id want her to have an effective weapon she has skills with

    not a 50cal desert eagle

    not a dinosaur colt 45

not a fake ass ak47 bristling with all type of appendages in attempt to

Impress the SOB she’s going to shoot

    punchin paper aint lethal

    fancy grips ......lites aint lethal

2000rounds in the bottom of a safe aint lethal

pullin that trigger with the full confidence somethings going to DIE

    Thats Lethal

For the money the Ruger LC9s or EC9s is hard to beat. My wife carried one of those in her purse for a time and liked it a lot. I was carrying a Sig 365 and she liked it equally well. We decided it would be a good idea if we both had identical guns so I sold her Ruger and added a 2nd Sig. I shoot a lot and have no problem using multiple guns, but we decided it would be best if she learned one. It is a lot easier for her to carry the gun and extra mags in her purse than it is for me. Lots of advantages to both of us having the same gun

I have never understood the concept of a "Woman's Gun" or a "Women's Bike" or anything that insinuates a Women is inferior or weak, Remember, there are Weak Men & Strong Women. take her to the gun store, she might surprise you. jmop

My wife has carried legally on and off the job for many years. No, she does not have the strength to rack a slide like I do. Her carry is perfect for her use. Sometimes men just happen to be stronger than women, no hidden agenda here, not rocket surgery either...

Well said, I agree, wither it be a male or female the carry should be perfect for them!! Yes, sometimes a man is stronger than a woman, but not as often as one might think. My personnel preference for carry is and always will be a revolver, in a stressful situation I don't want to worry about any "Hick-ups" & i have never owned a semi auto that didn't at least once jmop
