Don't go with Rotopax, especially for gas. Faulty locks, leaks, and expansion in the sun.

Too true! Having mine under the bed cover out of direct sunlight is key to their current (and hopefully continuing) integrity. Again, the ones I have are the last Rotopax I will buy.

200lbs is a big deal with these trucks with the payload being so low. That's 16% of my truck's payload and that's not factoring in any camping stuff or the people in the truck :) Or, another way of looking at it, with that tank full and four 200lb guys in it, you're right up next your GVWR and don't get to bring anything else other than lunch. If you already have a canopy on your truck then it's likely that you're right at GVWR with only three guys. And the extra weight of the tank is always with you... you don't have the option of easily leaving the extra weight behind as you would with cans.

Our trucks don't have much capacity and weight sneaks up on you, especially with sliders/armor/canopies/etc. If I were a road warrior and running my truck basically stock but putting tons of highway miles then a long range tank would make more sense to me. I mostly use my truck for exploring and road trips with my family, I just can't personally justify the weight penalty when my truck is already heavy :)

I have LRA’s extended range 34 gal tank. Not cheaper than carrying jerrycans. Not perfect either. But do I regret? Nope.

    I no longer deal with:
Expanding rotopax (change in temp and elevation made me have to check on them with every stop).
    Leaking jerrycans.
Worry about when I need to stop

I know people will argue that you should stop every 2 hours to prevent a leg clot (which I agree) but I no longer have to do it at a gas station. I have younger kids that sleep during car rides. I can choose the stops more wisely.

if you comb through the LRA tank threads you’ll see the most common problems which are not that bad.

I think I'm going to add a Wavian fuel can. It obviously isn't as carefree as a larger tank but I have only been able to find a 34 gallon replacement fuel tank option and that does seem as though the weight would be a concern. Now I just need to figure out how best to mount it.

Thanks to everyone for your input, it is appreciated.

I completely agree it's totally subjective to the truck. A lot pf people tend to forget that our Tacoma's are light trucks, capable off the paved roads though they may be, weight adds up fast!

My setup is comparatively light - I have a rear seat delete with a light cargo box, light-ass TRD skid and slightly heavier steel lowpro bumper. My girl and my dog accompany me on camping trips with my 2500 lb popup and I get 16+ mpg. I don't do heavy wheeling anymore so I don't need the heavy armor or winch. Also all my friends are family men with kids and don't do shit anymore but get fat and watch Netflix so they're not weighing me down either :D

Without the girl, dog, popup, and camping gear, I get a cool 18-19 in town and 19-21 on the highway.
(Consider also the 4.88's and OVTune that really helped to achieve that). Dropping the 285's for 265's helped too, at the cost of not looking quite as bad ass.

But yeah, one has to consider the main use of the truck and commit to the extra weight and accept the loss of mpg and range.

Good fuel cans are not that heavy, so with gas weight around 6 lbs, that makes 10gals about 60lbs and maybe 5 lbs for a can, your looking at carrying about an extra 70lbs. That is a small amount to carry to make it to the next station.

On my last trip up to the Arctic Ocean, I sold 5 gals to a guy because he didn’t have enough. On that trip I had 10 on the GX and 10 in my trailer.

if you do some places like the AZ strip, depending on where you go, you might need fuel for up to 600 miles. Doing a trans Labrador highway, I believe they recommend fuel for 400 miles.

The idea that you should stop every couple of hours is great, at 62 I do it all the time, even if there is nothing there. In the US, getting gas every 200-300 miles is not a big problem, but when you get off road or go north of our border that is not always the case.

This truck is too small to carry most 3 other guys I know unless they are under 5’8” or so. At 6’2”, my seat is at 90% back, not too many people are sitting behind me. I will carry the gas, they can drive their own truck.

This worked best for me. Its now secured with a ratchet strap but the bungie cord was just to test if it fit under the tonnau

Price on this is close to 1/2 this looks like it would work for tonnau guys also. my 4 dollar solution does a good job and the ratchet strap does give it some inhale and exhale room

Direct from the source an almost identical if not identical item is cheaper (most likely even with shipping).

Whoa, shipping to me in Texas is $21! So probably not!

Wait yes it is - Amazon is $23 shipping on top of the cost!
