As somebody who installed one of the rectangular surface installs (with 2 outlets and 2 USBs), you are correct on all points.

Here is how I think about it, I was installing (2) outlets (my design requirement), so I could add (2) USBs without any significant additional real-estate used up by installing a surface mount unit. I just figured it was a couple extra USBs at no significant area or effort. I also added some 12V cigarette outlets that are powered from secondary battery (that are always hot) in the same area. I haven't measured the parasitic power used by the USB in the 120v outlet, but I THINK it is very very small when nothing is plugged in.

    So yes,
    for several reasons,
it would be 'better' to make the USBs separate from the 120V... But maybe you want both...?

A very important thing to consider: I think it is likely that newer USBs are going to come out in the future, so maybe its not the best usage to install USB outlets, instead install extra 12V cigarette outlets, so you can plug in the best/latest super duper USB outlets into the cigarette outlets, rather than being stuck with outdated technology.
(If you had permanently installed 500mA USB outlets in your truck, those would seem pretty worthless now compared to the quickcharge USB chargers of today.)

yes, i agree that look with the grommet is nice. i considered it, one issue for me is i need the high speed good usb charge for higher end devices. those that i looked at were standard charging. Qualcomm 3.0 is the way to go. overall, using the 2 devices took up more room, in the end might be a little better though. time will tell. Why cant they just do it from the factory -- ugh...

I know this is an old post, but do you happen to remember on the MT, what wire you had to ground? If any.

Yes, listen to caribe. It's been almost two years since I did the mod. Good thing it's all still working.

    Thanks!

My daughters will appreciate the USB outlets and 3A should be enough for battery charging. Just gotta get the wire colors right.

Do you have the plug and play adapter or are you doing it yourself?

I went with the toyota plug (from the 4-runner I think) and I'm planning to put it in the center console... some day.

I'm going to dance with the angry pixies all by myself. I got the power grommet from Amazon. The first one in the Products box below.

I just want to stop pulling the center console. A couple of the molded-in clips are not very happy. This should be the last mod for it.
