Next on the long list of to-dos the coolant bypass tube. Before installing the tube, the intake manifold has to be removed. This is done with the removal of 6 bolts and 2 nuts, using a 12mm socket. The two nuts are circled in red and the bolts are circled in white. There is a bolt located behind the throttle body and you need to remove the throttle body in order to reach this bolt. You can barely see the head of the bold circled in white in one of the pics. Removal of the throttle body is pretty easy. Just remove two nuts and two bolts.

After Speedytech7 recommended replacing the plastic coolant by pass tube with a metal one from later Tacoma model years and reading the this thread : https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/water-bypass-pipe-no-1.201053/page-4
I decided to buy a knock off part from Amazon $30 with free shipping. Even though, I ordered the correct part number. That was a big mistake. When I tried to fit the part, I realized that not only was the flange too thin (the white arrow in the pic shows the space between the end of the thread and part, this would not allow the flange to be tightened properly) but the part was so poorly made the flange was tapered on one end (indicated by the black arrows).

Because I received the part before I left for my work trip and I have been gone for about a month, they would not take it back. So I ordered an OEM Toyota part from Amazon. Crap part is black, OEM Part is metallic.

The coolant bypass tube also requires that a metal gasket be installed. As you can see from the photos one side has a raised surface and the other has a depressioned surface. Not sure which side faces the engine block and which faces the flange. Not even sure if it matters, anyone have any thoughts on this? I ended up mounting the depressioned surface to the engine block.

I tightened the two nuts to mount the coolant bypass tube. I don’t have the torque spec but it the nuts will stop turning once it gets to the bottom of the threads. DO not try to tighten beyond this as it will strip the threat or nut. Reinstalled the intake manifold and torque bolts and nuts to 25Nm. Reinstalled the throttle body and torqued to 9Nm. Voila! All Done!! ....for now ;)

Next step: Finally got around to pulling the motor and transmission from the Hilux. It wasn't bad and I ended up getting it done by myself. I unbolted the motor from the transmission and cherry picking the motor from the front and then dropping the transmission from the bottom. Had to remove the hood in order to pull out the 22r. Time to say good bye to the tried and true 22R. Hardest thing about this was removing the two bolts all the way in the back, sandwiched between the firewall and the tranny, holding the tranny to motor. Took me a good 40 mins to get the bolts out 1/2 turn at a time!!!
