The black is where the harder steel is in the bit, the softer steel turns a grayish color.
It also depends on the forging process. The one in my avatar is all 1 solid piece of steel so the black is more consistent. The 2 different types was originally due to how precious it was to get the harder steel and not the softer iron, so blacksmiths would use just the steel in the bit and then forge it into the iron. Kinda why you tend to find lots of older axes with the poll mushroomed over after being used as a hammer.
The longer it soaks the darker it gets, and that crusty layer that forms on top of the liquid can be used like a Polish after you cleaned and sharpened to add more dark to it.

    Interesting information, thanks Brian :fistbump:

So, update. Went and looked at them yesterday. Used a small scraper very lightly and all the heavier flake rust came right off. Then I used a toothbrush sized soft metal brush and cleaned them pretty good. I'm going to Lowes later to get a round steel brush that fits better in the eyes. I'm also going to pick up the linseed oil. More on this in a minute.

I was surprised to find that the heads did have that solid black look but only at the bit ends. Based on what you said above, that makes sense now, except, would it be a distinct difference between the two? This almost looks more like a coating. The remainder of the heads is a much brighter silver color. Pics later.

Ok, linseed oil. I would like the handles to be darker. Like a walnut color. Here's what I'm buying.

    https://www.lowes.com/pd/Jasco-32-fl-oz-Slow-to-Dissolve-Linseed-Oil/50298071

But can I add some pine tar to this, or just get a half pint of some wood stain and add it?

I also want to ask, have you ever heard of Balistol?

    https://ballistol.com/about-us/

    https://ballistol.com/uses/wood-care/

What's unique about this stuff is moisture/water causes it to emulsify and spread. I use it on all my padlocks. They've been outside for 15 years with only one or two applications.

I was thinking about a mixture of linseed, balistol, pine tar and maybe a stain. Like a 90/3/3/3 mix.

    Thoughts?

just be careful with Jasper! Jaspers engines aren’t what they used to be 15 years ago.
I went through two Jasper engines within at year for my Nissan Xterra. After the second one went up that’s when I bought my Tacoma.

Friggin nervous about those Tacomabeast headlights I bought. I can across sooo many negative reviews. I think I’m going to send them back before I even open the box. What do y’all think?

It takes me under 3 hours to get there from dunkirk, and 2 hours to get home on the evening since there's less traffic

I offered you the camper so you could stay the night... Sunday was fun. Next time everyone is up we need to spend less time shooting & more time on the trails. And I need to remember to bring my chainsaw. More logging roads are being cut in so we will have to explore those soon.
