Just a thought, and I'm sure you've thought of this, source a 3rd member from Bishop or one of the wrecking yards Carson City, and have the Bishop Mobile Auto Repair install it on-site?

You are welcome to store your truck in my back yard here in Big Pine for free.
I am about an hour south of Mammoth on 395.

No beef ribs. At least they didn't last time I was over there. The St. Louis ribs are cooked to perfection! The chicken and the tri-tip are very good also.

If I had seen this I probably would have, thanks for offering. I ended up showing up to pick up my rental car 4 minutes after 5, and despite repeatedly asking them to hold off for me, lights were off by the time the tow truck showed up.

Considering I left my girlfriend back up in Mammoth. Is there any easy transport between Bishop and Mammoth?

I'm unaware of transport, although Mr. K's Automotive has a roll-back or two. They might be worth calling.

Bump. I'm hoping this all worked out. Sorry to hear the rental car company shut the doors.

Guess I owe this thread some closure. Thanks for all your inputs, recommendations and offers to help.

First thing I have to say is that Kyle at the Bishop Enterprise is right up there with Satan. Ended up returning to bishop the next day and getting another rental car to drive home .

Came back the next weekend with a rental truck and a uhaul trailer.

Pulled the rear apart once I was back and found, the spider gear was in real rough shape.

Luckily the airlocker was spared and it only cost me a set of gears and not more. The wear pattern wasn't so good on the gears so I imagine they'd been in not great shape for a while here.

Any weird noises? Gears don't really go without warning.

I drove 5 hours out to Mammoth the day before this happened, no noises whatsoever. When it initially started, I had been offorad in 4 low and just got back on the road, I just felt a slight vibration that worsened with speed. By the time I got it apart, I had loaded and unloaded it from a trailer 3 or so times which I imagine only made the problem worse as I heard some pretty heinous noises.

Interesting. I lost a rearend on a chevy blazer some time ago. It made some pretty clear wah wah wah wah noises for months before it finally launched a tooth through the cover.

Almost looks like the pinion gear was making contact with the arb locker

Right... Now I'm not sure if that was a result of the teeth braking off and potentially displacing the pinion in the first place or maybe something that happened first. I assumed that a tooth broke first which caused the other effects.
