I have an old US Army fold-up shovel. It works great and essentially folds to the size of the spade. I picked through a pile of shovels at flea-market to find a US one. It was a pile of "military" shovels. No idea of the vintage but it is a terrific "truck shovel".

You're not far off. Fire shelters are woven silica bonded to aluminum foil. Fire shelters are designed for radiant heat. They will fail in direct contact with flames. Absolutely a worst-case, last-chance scenario use.

 

Any of the vinyl stickers on cloth will lift right off with a little heat.

A little, like a blow dryer on low, not a heat gun.

Nice. I'll put them on my list for when it's time to replace my existing tires. I'm running Cooper's right now, also snow rated and no complaints, it's just nice to have options and the General's seem to be highly rated too.

If he can afford a $240 shovel, more power to him. I am personally in the wrong business. I would be more interested in knowing what lifestyle puts him in that much real life or death situations often enough to justify his logic.

What are those attachments for the shovel? I usually carry a shovel in the winter and haven't found a good way to mount it. That looks like it could be my solution!

 

Looks likes quickfists on a rail mount. Not sure if its a COTS rail or homemade, but you can make them yourself pretty easily.

 

Interesting. I'm not familiar with them so I'll have to look into them a bit more.
