That was a surprisingly uninformative article.
Does the Hilux come with the 2.7 and 3.5 engines?
    Are they the same?

Hilux's are little tanks. The ones I have been in were diesels, last forever, and unstoppable. Interior access cab seemed very similar to the Tacoma. There are some Toyota offroad accessories that aren't available for the Tacoma as well.

So they are better engineered and built than the Tacoma?

More options, diesel. Not sure if I would say they are better engineered or built, still Toyota and uses a lot of the same parts. My truck will probably last just as long as a Hilux of the same year. Part of it is the cool factor, since it is very difficult to have one in the states. I would sell my truck in a heartbeat for a diesel manual Hilux. Plenty of power and better MPG

    Better for what?

The Tacoma in its current iteration is a lifestyle truck/SUV, and the design keeps creeping more in that direction.

The Hilux is a utility vehicle first, other things later.

Engineering and construction differences reflect that. The Tacoma has a nicer interior and rides better on the road than any Hilux I've driven or ridden in.

I am not sure how many parts they share as the poster above indicates. Owning a Tacoma and having used hiluxes, I can't see where they have anything in common aside from the toyota badging.

FWIW the current Ford Ranger looks and feels a lot more like a hilux than a tacoma. Test driving one will give you a pretty good feel for what a hilux is like aside from the power plant.

I’ve driven diesel Hiluxs in Thailand out in the jungle, and they felt solid. It was an adjustment driving on the left and shifting with left hand but based on that experience I’d swear by the Hilux.
