Though the handlebar position does not seem to be very comfortable...

it goes down mountains, not paved paths. I can assure you the handlebar position is not uncomfortable when you’re in a proper “attack” position pointed downhill.

I haven't read all the responses to this but discs are nicer but decent rim brakes work as well (until the rim gets wet/muddy...depends on your riding conditions).

As far as selling the Giant and looking to upgrade I'd suggest riding IT for a while and make sure this isn't a passing fad and waste of money... Or, look on Pinkbike after you decide your budget and style you want (DH, XC, DJ, full squish or hardtail).

    Alright...kinda caught up now.

The recommendation of the Fathom (27.5 or 29) is a good one. I'd also look at Specialized Fuse and Salsa Timberjacks as well.

I'll likely be flamed for this but if you like to upgrade stuff (wheels, crankset, forks whatever) I'd kinda lean away from the Trek Roscoe mainly because of that rear hub size... That said, and the reason I DID NOT buy one, the 2020 Fathoms have that hub sizing as well which deterred me. The 2021 got the upgrade, make sure you're not getting a leftover.

Dang I’m just now seeing this thread !

    I’ve got a 2020 Specialized Stumpy EVO 29”.
Modded the suspension (of course) to get 160/170mm travel over the 140/150mm stock travel.
It’s a shred sled that climbs too !

Got to get the picture with the true color !

I also have a Haro hardtail that i just recently rebuilt top to bottom - need to take some good pictures and throw those up too !

Well, it really comes down to how (or if) you want to spend your money. For me, if I upgraded the brakes, then I'd end up wanting to upgrade other stuff and spend more money. But with a frame of that age, it's harder to find parts and you'll be limited in options. Then I'd end up regretting spending the money and wish that I'd just put it towards a new bike.

If you'll be content with new brakes and that causes you ride more, then it's probably worth it. If you go with hydraulic and do the work yourself, then it can be a good learning experience (assuming that you haven't gotten into much bike maintenance before). If you find some mechanical disc brakes, they'll probably be cheaper than hydraulic, and easier to install.

I think the important thing is time spent riding. It sounds like you haven't been riding a lot lately and you want to get back into it. Again, if new brakes cause you to ride more and you're happy with the money spent then go for it. If you're a couple of years away from getting a new bike, take the time to figure out what kind of riding you like best, and let that steer you towards your next bike.

So, wasn't sure where this should go, a one of the bike threads, the metal detecting thread, or what, but since it was mostly MTB, and I'm showing my MTB off, here it sits...

Got myself a new Rocky Mountain Fusion 40 29'er a couple of weeks ago, and yesterday went for a ride up a local trail to an old abandonded gold mining area for a bit of metal detecting (Grant total finds for the day, 2 spent .303 casings, 1 large nut, and eleven cents). On the way back I decided to fly my drone over the river for some close-up shots of the high water (something I've done many times) and for whatever reason, things went wonky and the drone crashed in a a tree on the other side of the river. There was absolutely no crossing the river, but fortunately, on the opposite bank is a logging road which I knew I could access, but isn't maintained very well, and had some nasty hills, and meant a >15km ride each way.. but, what's a feller to do?

Random shot of new bike at a water break at about km 5.5. Yes, that's a climbing belt, spurs and flipline on the carrier!

At the crash site, looking across the river. The arrow indicates the trail and the location I was flying.

The tree that 'caught' my drone. It landed in the nest of branches shown by the arrow, which is about 20 feet up. This is why I brought my climbing gear; while I could have probably knocked it down using a long branch, it almost certainly would have gone into the river.

    Where she spent the night...

The view from the tree down the side of the canyon wall. Even though it's not apparent, the tree actually leans out toward the river at about a 10 degree angle.

    Rescue complete!

Boneyard Lake lunch stop on the way home.

Drone is now drying out and in a couple of days I'll throw a battery in and see if she survived!

They never announced why, some speculated to sell them as current year models to avoid discount since frame design carried over
