Just trying to see if it’s even feasible to get around on the highway with this setup. I will eventually be getting 255/85’s but was wondering if my current setup would be bearable right now. I don’t mind doing 3k rpm on the highway, but if it’s hitting something like 4K at 80mph then that’s just too much.

Anyone have experience with this combo, or is it too stupid? Lol.

Just go on grimm jeeper and play with the calculator and rpms at speed to get an idea. It shows that with 4.88s you would be at 3350 with 265/75s and 3200 with 255/85s which is a bit high. Which isn't completely a bad thing since the higher rpm helps spin the heavier taller wheel combo along rolling hills, but it does get old on long trips. 4.88 will also make it easier to start from stops and hill starts. At the end of the day you can't have it all, especially with the 2.7. Quick acceleration and easier cruising will mean cutting down your top speed.

I'm regeared with 5.29 and 315/75s and cruise at 2700rpm at 70mph. I don't ever go faster than that so can't speak for 80.

tl;dr: 4.88 is a good gear ratio for 2.7 MT IMO

Edit: forgot the link to grimm jeeper, apologies

Thanks bubbles! You’ve always been so wise...

2700 at 70 sounds just fine. How much of a difference would you say the 4.88’s make? I really want to turbo this thing but I feel like the 4.88s may just be enough. I’m not entirely sure I’m ready for the headache of boosting a 2TR with no turbo kit and no easy way to tune. Lol
