What’s up taco lovers. Simple question , is anyone running a xl sized rtt on their truck? I’m a new member and I’ve searched around a bit and found and fell into the depths of rtt threads, yet haven’t found what I’m looking for. I have a 2nd gen dblb and about to pull the trigger on a Roam Vagabond Xl but would love to see/hear ppls opinions and setups prior on the bigger tents. I’ve measured everything out and I know it’ll fit, just would love to see a visual representation to help ease my mind.
    Cheers

We have one of the larger tents-a CVT Mt. Rainier- but on a short bed. Lots of people seem to go with the smaller models, though. Ours hangs over the tailgate a little, but we absolutely needed the space with me (6'3"), my wife (5'10") and at least 2 dogs. The Mt. Rainier is a "4+ person " model. The next size up has 2 ladders, ours just has the 1. How do you plan to mount the tent to the truck?IMG_20190508_115821.jpg

Nice setup. It’s gonna be me, the wife, our lil man and our pooch so a small tent seems tight. You’d be surprised on how hard it’s been to find any pics of the larger tents on anything smaller than a tundra or those Jeep truck things. I’ll be mounting it on a 12” RCI rack.

Yeah the large ones seem rare. My brother wants one on top of his Wrangler, which will probably be bigger than the roof itself.

Definitely consider bedside stiffeners. The bed walls are known to bow out with weight on the bed sides. We also found that weather tight storage and security without a cap is a PITA. Just something to keep in mind.

Regarding this website, you are better off googling "tacomaworld xl rooftop tent" than using the search function in the website. Also, it's just us in the thread now, but it's helpful to avoid confusion when responding to someone by hitting the "quote" button at the bottom of their post. That's what I did in this response to you.

Sweet. Thanks man. I’m learning that I’m a bit of an idiot when it comes to navigating around here. I have some Total Chaos bed stiffeners on watch to help bare the load. Possibly also stiffen up the suspension a bit being once all put together I plan on running it all year round.

Here’s a picture of my Smittybilt Overlander XL Gen 2 on my DCLB. I’d take a side picture but the rack and tent are both stored in the garage.

It looks like the Overlander XL and Roam XL are pretty close to the same size when closed (72x48) so it should fit exactly like mine - flush with the back tailgate and enough room to remove the cover by the back window. My rack is also pretty much the same height as the RCI so this should give you an idea of how perfect the fit is.

Also, one issue you might have is with these metal window awning poles for the side of the tent that is mounted to the rack. They slot into the frame of the RTT and will probably interfere with the roof of the truck since the frame of the RTT sits below the roofline with the 12” tall rack.

The side of the tent that folds out will have no clearance issues so you can use the awning poles provided. I simply used a bungee cable and hooked it to my roof rack in order to get tension on the opposite side awning.

That looks real nice. I appreciate it, and these are the pics I was hoping to see. I just pulled the trigger on the Roam XL with their Black Friday sale.

Perhaps I might piggy-back my question, here. I’m looking at an Smittybilt XL to go on a second-gen access cab with a 6 foot bed. I was planning to use cab-height bars (I welcome anyone’s wisdom on a couple of points: 1) looks like I need 3 bars for an XL, not just two? I was planning to use TracRac, but I’ve never seen three of those on a truck. I’d prefer that height so that we can put canoes and long lumber up there, when the tent is not up there. But maybe that is crazy with an RTT? 2) bed stiffeners for such a rig? Thanks in advance for anyone who can help a truck noob with an adventurous family.

This might be a better option for you:

    https://truckbrigade.com/products/l...tem-toyota-tacoma-2005?variant=15076140679214

    - It’s slightly taller than cab height
    - Can purchase compatible bed stiffeners
    - Crossbars are adjustable front to rear
