New member here with first of many questions. I recently bought my son a 2015 prerunner. He has lots of ideas for upgrades but first he wants to upgrade the sound system while keeping the head unit. Neither of us are really mechanically inclined but after watching a couple youtube videos I feel pretty confident that we can handle swapping out the speakers. The amp install looks a little more involved so we will save that for a later date.
I don't know enough about this stuff to even be dangerous. I know there are different types of speakers (component /3 way) but what kind should we use when we replace the factory speakers? Does the fact that we may eventually add the amp and subs down the road. have any bearing on the type of speakers to get? Does keeping the factory head unit effect the choice of speakers? Just looking for a little more volume and better sound quality.
Any suggestions? Definitely need to be plug and play. I don't want to get into soldering wires.

I replaced the speakers in my 15',and noticed no difference. It wasn't until I put a new headunit in with some power did they come alive.

If you're upgrading your speakers, and you think there's more power coming from adding amps, then buy speakers that will handle the power of what you plan to install later.

If you're wonder what will fit, then go to Crutchfield.com. I love that company, and it's the only place I buy my car audio from... In addition to their head units and/or speakers, they give you step by step instructions to do the upgrade. Their customer service is second to none! Heck, ask them what speakers to buy if you plan to upgrade the head unit and amps later. I'm sure they won't steer you wrong.

Second Crutchfield. You will want speaker electrical connector adapters and may need physical speakers adapters (speaker dependent). Since you are keeping the stock headunit, suggest you get efficient speakers 90 db plus.

If I decide to replace the head unit would I lose the ability to change any vehicle settings? I'm still getting to know this truck. I rarely get to drive it because he won't give up the keys!

You can get kits that keep the controls. Talk to a Cruchfield “audio counselor”.

    Crutchfield for sure!

May I suggest for the front www.kenwood.com/usa/car/excelon/kfc-xp6902c/ made to fit 2nd gen Tacoma
I have them and for me the sound is great. Crutchfield has them as well.

LOL because when your son bought his truck they forgot to tell him every Tacoma comes with mod fever (it's a hidden option).

All the best your new TW brother

Just ignore any wiring on the speakers and make sure the tweeters are in front.

Are they even worth having down there? Imo, no.

I'd replace the head unit first. The sound is only as good as it's source. Crutchfield is an excellent diy source and will even splice the harness adapters to the new radio. For a fee of course.

It's really not that hard to replace.

Agree with the crutchfield suggestions. Personally, I would go with a new radio and amp before replacing the speakers. You will notice the greatest improvement in sound quality along with minimizing added labor time of speakers, which can be added down the road if needed.

Took everyone’s advice and called crutchfield this morning. Now leaning towards taking the easier route and replacing head unit and speaker’s. Just want to be sure removing the factory radio won’t cause me to lose any functionality or information settings for the truck. In my 2016 Colorado I would have lost the ability to adjust several settings.

2-way component set. However, here's what you need to know. Swapping out speakers won't achieve much. Even if you amplify them with 100 watts of power and also add an aftermarket head unit, it still won't sound good. If you want better sound, you need to deaden the doors. Go to youtube, search Sound deadening 2010 tacoma. The more thorogh of a sound deadening job you do, the better music will sound in your truck. Anyone with high-end speakers in their ride has deadened it (Unless its a brand new luxury car that comes superbly insulated from the factory).
Yu can have a local audio shop do this part if you want, then after its deadened you can have fun installing the speakers and amp.
Best of luck, and I second or third researching via crutchfield.

edit - Amplifiers can be dangerous if the proper precautions are not taken. If the power wire gets crushed or is abraised over time by rubbing on metal, you can start a fire, and it can happen at any time. Consult a professional when you feel like you are out of your element. With that said, the right youtube videos or forum thread how-to's can show you perfect techniques, so do not fear if you're mentally flexible and willing to learn!

I upgraded my head unit first, speakers later. Just changing the head unit made a huge difference in the sound quality. No matter what you do first (speakers vs. head unit & components), start with the end in mind. If you do speakers first, buy speakers that will support the type of head unit (and amp if applicable) that will ultimately be used. You don't have to choose a specific head unit model, just try to decide on a manufacturer and how much power you'll be pushing to speakers so everything will work properly in the end.
