I have a 2019 Tacoma TRD Off-Road, my friend & I are trading headlights. He has a 2019 SR. Is there a way I can use my drl harness to get the turn signals to be drls, like how they are on SR/SR5’s? I don’t like the led drls I like the Amber turn signal drl like the 2nd gens. Which is why I’m trading him.

I think it could be done fairly easily. You want it to act just like the SR? Amber DRL, Amber flashing with turn signal, and off when the headlights are on? Or dim when the headlights are on? (sorry, been running switchbacks so long I don't recall how they acted when the headlights are on)

Actually, it might be more of a pain than I had thought. Your issue is the DRL signal on the TRD is constant, so you can't combine it with turn signal. You could get around that I suppose by using a SPDT relay and having the turn signal interrupt the DRL signal, causing it to flash. But when your low beams are on, the DRL is off, so that wont work. You could also have it interrupt the parking light signal I suppose, but they wont flash at full brightness.. No clean way of doing that I see.

Option A: Bulb stays lit 100%, flashes with turn signal. (this would also be a "negative" flash. Meaning off when its supposed to be on, on when its supposed to be off)
Option B: Bulb lights at 100 and 50%, but flashes at 100 or 50%. Same negative flash as above.
Option C: You wire back to the stalk switch to grab the turn signal from there. I don't believe it is flashing before it goes to the ECU. You could use it to interrupt the signals (DRL and parking) and drive the actual flasher at 100%, non-negative.

Option C is your best bet I think, but it isn't the easiest.

@caribe makaira Probably knows a better way. Caribe knows all

The bulb holder (3 pin) and connector of the rear STOP and TAIL bulb fits into the turn signal hole of the SR headlamp.
You could de-pin the turn signal and insert these into the new (rear) connector. The missing DRL input can also be de-pinned and inserted into the new connector or better yet, a matching connector with a pigtail for the DRL input to the new connector. You'll have an additional Parking circuit source with ground for other lamps, like the grill leds...

I just did the swap & ran into the 2/3 wire socket. Lol. I’m gonna go order a 3 wire connector w/ pigtail. I don’t got front turn signals right now lol.

I think you're the first one to say this. Most SR/SR5 owners try to get a separate DRL/Turn Signal wire.

Shit, I just shorted the wire harness and burnt my truck down and Toyota won’t cover it.:rofl::rofl:. Would be cool if you get it to work.

I hated the “L” shaped drl lol.. I got all clear tail lights made, the sr5 headlights are all chrome. That’s another reason why I got sr5’s.

Not exactly sure what makes my post a thread jack. The OP was looking for a way to get turn signal bulbs to be a DRL.

Well the OP is done and he never mentioned switchbacks...SR Headlight behavior is not a switchback "feature".:burp:

P.S. You must be communication with @Puppypunter, huh?:D

Well he wanted his turn signals to switch back between being turn signals and DRLs. By using the DD module you could emulate the SR5 DRL/turn signal function. Not necessarily a switchback in terms of color, but could plug in a static connection and a turn signal to the module. You would then get a constant DRL and also have the same bulb perform as a turn signal since the module would break the static connection when the turn signal is activated. Your bulb would then switch back between a DRL and turn signal, hence not a threadjack, but a useful option.

If I use the third wire from the three wire plug on my turn signal & tap it into one of the two upper prongs in the drl plug, do I need to wire In the ground?

I don't know what way you went with for the "down" grade.
The SR uses the low filament as Parking illumination (doesn't go out when headlight low beam is selected) and the high filament for Turn and DRL and the bulb shares the same ground.
Since your vehicle has the DRL on a separate circuit you loose the parking circuit on that bulb, which the switchback need.
I suggest you remove the input from the DRL and replace it with a fused IGN source, that way the switchbacks will be ON when vehicle is ON and flash when turns are selected.
The DRL's go out when the headlight stalk is in the headlight low beam position.
