Have you read any of the posts on here in particular or on the Web in general about Tacoma automatic transmission shifting issues? There are a number of TSB’s out to cure “gear hunting” and a bit of controversy as to whether constantly flashing the ECU has done any good to resolve the problem.

Having owned many other manual vehicles before my taco, I think Toyotas execution of the MT in the taco is downright terrible, but to each their own. I test drove an MT before I bought my truck.. clutch feel is the weakest link. There is a mod for it though that many say fix it. I can't confirm.

Otherwise, a $3k difference isn't the end of the world IMO, and the mileage difference is negligible. I would start by actually test driving it, or another one, then make your decision. Good luck

    Think about these questions:
Do you plan on keeping it until it rots beneath you?
Is the auto paid off, or will you roll the extra money into an existing loan?

If the models are comparable and you intend on keepign it long term, then send it. A few thousand over many years to make yourself whole might be worth it. but if you're adding into a loan (or god forbid, extending the current one), do some calcs at how much more money you'll be spending just to get a manual transmission and it'll be way more than a few thousand. Plus, assuming both last to the same mileage... that difference in miles could mean one less year with the manual versus the auto. If it eases your mind and youre dead set on the manual, consider the extra long term money to get a manual the "stupid decision tax". You bought the wrong vehicle for you, so consider the stupid tax a learners fee.

I love my manual, it was a must have, salesperson “convinced” me to test drive the auto, when we came back he asked what do you think, I said it’s an auto and the first thing I told you was I want a manual transmission. We walked in and started the hunt.

that being said, it looks like you would be loosing money, and I’m cheap and would not lose money to get a vehicle with more miles. Shit I had a hard time trading in my access cab, but the kids wouldn’t fit anyone

Drove trucks with two shifters, a 3 speed on the column and have probably backed up in a stick shift more than you've been forward. But anyway they're going away fast.

Thank you all for your advice. I’m going to hold off on the trade. I just can’t see paying more just to get a manual transmission. My truck is fine otherwise.

I think anchovy may be a better metaphor, since it used to be very popular (standard), but recently no one likes the taste of anchovies (but I still do).

But everything else is spot on. Time is money, and selling a manual is usually more time consuming. It may be different when it comes to Tacomas, though, since they're really one of only two options in the class that I'm aware of to offer a manual.

As for prices with the trade, it's my understanding that the only way to get a manual is to go to a DC in the TRD OR or Sport, so it is a more expensive vehicle (that, or it's a 4cyl and they're really marking it up).

I did the opposite. Bought a 18 MT new in March 18 and traded it Feb 20 to get a 20 AT new. I wanted to like the MT but after a couple years of it being my daily, I couldn't stand it any longer. Something about the 3rd gen MT just sucked. Owned and drove many MTs over the years but something was just off about how Toyota did it with this truck. I love the 20 AT.

I do think it's great Toyota offers the MT still. I just thought it drove like shit as a daily and I wasn't interested in doing the OV tune and or accumulator delete on a relatively new vehicle just to get it to drive normal.

automatics have a bigger market but they also have MUCH more competition. so regardless of how many people are driving an automatic, it still comes down to SUPPLY vs the demand. i'd argue that the manuals can bring more money and are going to hold their value more. when the dealership ordered mine (since there weren't any on the ground in the area), there were dealerships across the country calling asking them to swap it.

and if the op lives in a state where they get sales tax credit on the trade, the $3k difference between the two is partially absorbed.

OK, 100% can drive a stick... but 90% of the population doesnt know how to drive in general

I agree. My new Tacoma with 6MT is due in the next week and other dealers have inquired about swapping it. (No Way!) Even if you assume that 18% of consumers want manuals, if there is only 5% supply, they are going to sell quick.

I was going to say anchovy, but for some reason I feel old and that kids these days dont know what a anchovy pizza is.

You can get a manual still in the access cab as long as you get a sport or OR. The auto access cab is actually more expensive than the manual double cab.

Dealers aren't in the business of paying you to take a vehicle off their hands. If they can't get money out of you, they won't make a sale as it isn't worth their time. I think the OP should sell his truck on his own then use the proceeds for a manual. Should be able to come out ahead. Manuals usually sit on the lots around here way longer than automatics. Most people either don't want to shift their own gears anymore or don't know how.

That's funny . We used order a pizza with everything except anchovies and that was because if you just said everything it came with them . When I was feeling no pain I could eat them but otherwise I didn't like them .

the toyota camry is one of the best selling vehicles of all time, dealerships pump out a ton of them every year. but if you stock up a used car lot full of them, your market days supply is going to be very high and they will sit. demand and supply mean little without each other

do you know how hard it is to private sale a car that expensive that most people will need financing for? and then if you live in a state where you get tax credit on your trade, you're losing out on that. so you'll end up holding the car longer, and you might break even on if you had just traded it. meanwhile you're putting miles on it while you're waiting for it to sell, and dealing with morons from fb or craigslist trying to lowball or scam you.

I still say that when ordering pizza, though I dont know of a single pizza place that I order from that have them, so the me saying it is just usually confusing to the kid taking my order.

I like manuals, but I sure don't want to drive one. Now if Toyota offered the 2.7 SR w the SX pkg in a manual I think I'd buy one.

Edit: I don't think Id trade a Tacoma in for another Tacoma.
