Read some things about gap insurance on here and I gotta say the warranty might be a rip but gap insurance has saved my ass
It is only 500$ And I got paid out over 5 grand on my first Gen Tacoma who’s frame rotted out
Insurance totaled the truck and only paid out 9 grand, gap insurance covered the other 5 grand on the loan. I would claim that as a win and I will forever buy gap insurance.

Some states require gap insurance if you still owe on the vehicle

OP, about a year ago I had a dealer in Dundee, MI quote the Toyota Platinum Zero Deductible Warranty for my 2019 TRD OR at $1795 for the 10YR/125K (B96). They also quoted $1,405 for the 8YR/125K (B81). I can share the contact info. if you. I personally passed on it.

You made me remember something i forgot.

Buying a BMW certified years ago they included a warranty. The finance guy trying the hard upsell on me got me impatient enough to tell him, you know, I changed my mind. I am going to use my own financing even if you match it or best it, I don't care. I'm tired and have made my decision and nothing anyone says is going to change my mind.

I don't remember it being vindictive, just realized that the quickest way to get out of there was to be direct and give them nothing.

I remember feeling offended that with the negotiation over, they were digging in my pockets still.

I always buy warranties but I always wait until I’m in with the contract guy and ask for a discount on every optional add on. I usually get what I feel is a good deal or I tell them to take it off. Most add ons are not necessary and get taken off, but not the warranty. I’ve been able to get them to go way down on this when deal is on the line. My history is usually a break even or better on claims. Too early to tell on my Tacoma, but I have peace of mind.

I brought my own financing one time. The finance guy tried his deceptive sales tactics with several lies regarding extended warranties and add-ons (even had a fake family picture on his desk!). He last offered me a .25% less financing rate. I was mad and told him NO to it all. He literally got red in the face and acted like a spoiled brat.

Of the seven new vehicles that I’ve bought, I’ve thought that the salesman was the easiest to deal with as they just want to make a sale and move on. IMHO, whoever is in the finance office is there because he's the biggest crook in the dealership.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the key fob thing... That was something else I got pressured on after I said 'No' ...
Mr. Warranty was 'You know how expensive it is to replace the fob/key if you lose it?'
I told him 'Hey, I'm 65 .. Have been driving since I was 15 .. And I've never ever once lost my car keys'...
I got that quizzical look from him, like when a dog hears something it doesn't understand.. LOL!

No shit ... I could see it being like one of those 'Car Shield' places (I'm SURE these commercials are nation-wide..) where you get the ' Your worst fear just happened.. Your car broke down ..Take it from Ice-T! .. We got your back!!' ...

Let us know 5 years from now how your warranty coverage performed when you have an issue and then find out the company that sold you that life time warranty is no longer in business.

I went through the same thing. 'Mr. Warranty' got pissed at me too when I kept saying 'No-no-no-no' and even had the GAUL to tell me 'I'm a Marine... I know how to handle guys like you..' WTF, really? I almost walked out the door.
The nice sales-lady who'd I'd been working with for 3 months to get me what I wanted (And she really did bust her ass to get me what I wanted and make it happen) had to step in and tell him to back off.
'Mr. Warranty' was the only boil-on-my-ass over what was otherwise a quick, easy and pleasant sales process.

The deal is not done until you go through the warranty guy masquerading as the finance guy. If your answer is no, and they don't accept it - start the walk. I've bought most vehicles from the same place for the very reason - the finance guy says "I don't suppose you want a warranty or any extra's huh?" I shake my head no without a word; less than 5 minutes later I'm driving home. The repair shop is horrendous, parts guy is cool, works out great.

I had a 89' B2200 ... Had it for 6 years .. 180K on it (I had a loooong work commute) .. That truck never broke on me once.
I traded it in when I bought a new Dodge van in 95' .. (Kids/camping/etc) ... About a year later I was ready to by another Mazda PU.. Wife needed a new daily-driver and wanted a truck. I was ready to buy one, until I realized that Mazda didn't make their own trucks anymore.. They were just 're-badged' Ford Rangers. No Thank You.
No disrespect to Taco's or 'Yota's' (Hey, I bought one..) .. but that B2200 was probably about the best and most trouble-free rig I've ever owned. Mazda made a huge mistake, not making their own trucks anymore.

LOL!!! It's like when yer kids are 4-5 years old and you try to 'reason' with them about why they shouldn't do, or have something ..
And after awhile of exasperation you just pull out the 'BECAUSE I SAID SO!' ... LOL!!!!

for those wondering about the extended warranty for their Toyota consider this...

Have a long look at all the TSBs issued by Toyota to correct prevalent problems well beyond the normal warranty period during the last 15 years. ie, leaf pack replacements, new frames ect..

Example. Toyota purchased back my 00 Tacoma due to frame rail rust back in 2009 at 150% retail Kelly Blue book ($12,400) and it had 198,000 miles. I was also able to strip anything off it or exchange parts that I wanted as long as I could drive it back to the dealership.. such as swapping out wheels/tires/seats/battery/tail gate etc

Example 2. Toyota replaced the leaf spring pack on my 06 at 145,000 miles and drive shaft at 181,000 miles, both under TSB at no cost to me. Many had their frames replaced on 2nd Gens from rust belt states which cost Toyota ~$15,000+ on a vehicle that had a book value of $10K.

    Nice job OP.

I think I got screwed over at the last minute in finance when the guy said he misquoted the warranty and jacked up the price a bit.

In the big scheme of things it wasn't that big of a difference. Maybe $500 or so? It still left a bad taste in my mouth and I was considering cancelling it but in the end figured it wasn't worth it.

After my experience with my previous vehicle an extended manufacturer warranty is something I'll always strongly consider from now on. I figure it's one of the things that you'll appreciate and will pay for itself when you need it. Would've been nice to have it with my last vehicle.

But as others said might not be worth it if you consider cost of paying out of pocket costs if something needs to be repaired or whatever.

It might be kind of outdated now and I think it was on Toyota Nation, can't remember if it was this board too, but there were threads about shopping for Toyota extended warranties and there would be information of some specific out of state dealers that would sell the warranties at really cheap prices. I think eventually Toyota started to disallow people to sell the extended warranties not in person/out of state anymore. But those threads also posted some of the actual dealer cost of the warranties too. And at the very least from what I gathered from those threads is that as other posters mentioned on here you can buy the extended warranties from other Toyota and Lexus dealers shortly after you buy your vehicle. So don't have to buy it from where/when you buy your vehicle and can shop around too. And it gives you a general idea on the price range to work with those warranties.

I think this was one of the threads:

Best friend in high school had an 88 B2200, extended cab with the five-speed. That little pickup is the reason I even started looking at small trucks. Then someone showed me Top Gear...

Happened to me when I was buying my 17 SR5 (Rip Inferno). The guy "misquoted" The warranty package and that caused me to say "then let's start over with the price for everything..." He wasn't happy.

Bottom line: if he hadn't lied, my naive self would have probably bought the warranty.

The Mazda B2200 was cheap but very well made and so reliable. I wish they still made then like that. They were easy to work on too. Toyotas were the same back then before they started tacking on all this crap we dont need on them. That little Mazda never got stuck in the snow. It would bounce and jump around going through it but it always would get me where I am going. The only complaint I ever had was with replacing the exhaust because Mazda made the exhaust manifold and front pipe one piece and it was expensive to replace. After 16 years I had to sell mine because it was no longer safe to drive. The cab mounts and core support had all rusted away from the frame.
I just read the other day that Mazda was bringing back their pick up trucks to the USA in another year or 2. Seen the Asian versions on the road now. I doubt they will be what they once were. Its the same with Toyota. I really like my 2017 but would rather have a older one that I could still work on. That's one of the few advantages of being older. I've seen better.

X1.. like my 3rd gen but would do anything to buy a new 1st or 2nd gen standard cab manual with locking front hubs. light, narrow, tight turning radius and easier to navigate off-road, at least for my off-road driving. As for pavement pounding.. 3rd gen all the way.

my 2000 back in the day

    I'm glad you canceled it!

The finance people are the worst! Even worse than the sales people. I always get into with the finance people. They HATE me.
