you can also fit a 285/75/17. That’s about 34”, it’s about 34.5” from leaf pack hanger to hanger (if they’re not bent to shit) So you Could probably get a smallish 315, but it starts to hang down pretty far and you risk damaging your spare dragging it over rocks.

sounds like you need a custom flatbed camper setup OP

Nice - were you running their standard or high clearance version?

Yep, I've read the relocation mod threads on fitting larger tires there. I'm only thinking about 285's so it should fit, but my thought was that if I go HC anyways it'd be good to get the tire out from under to reap the full benefits of the HC angles. Already did my exhaust chop!

Flatbeds are pretty awesome though, always liked the look and utility.

Harbor Freight should get into stuff like this. People love buying cheap stuff from HF and if it's cheap and for a Taco, SOLD!

Ditch the spare and carry a flat repair kit and a tire pump. Sure, you'll be screwed in the event of total tire destruction, but as long as you keep your 4 tires in good condition, this isn't very likely.

Oh man, I live walking distance from Harbor Freight...would be terrible for my wallet if they made Taco gear.

Agreed - I already carry a plug kit, extra valve cores, and compressor though in addition to my spare. I work in disaster recovery, so guilty of leaning towards overkill on my backups in everything I do lol.

I got the standard Wilco tire carrier from JEGS last month (10/19) for $612 including tax and shipping!!! Hasn't gotten here yet,, but I knew that when I ordered it. Must have caught a special, as I think it is over $778 now without tax/shipping.

SSO hybrid bumper, Warn winch, RCI skid trilogy, RRW sliders, everything in the cheap/free mods thread, and of course the frame recall work.
Replace driver and passenger doors with spare tires.

you could talk to an off-road fab shop. I have heard that there is a small mod that can be done in the factory location for a larger spare. I don’t know how much larger you can go. The fab shop I used for some work said my 275 would fit. Don’t know about 285. Just a thought.

You could always fabricate a tailgate with an integrated tire carrier. Someone here has done it.

Hey you should check ours out! www.dirtcomusa.com
We pushed it as high up as possible to give the best departure angle while still clearing the tailgate. I don't like the ones on the market that look like they are hanging below the factory bumper. That became an important factor when designing these for the 3rd Gen Tacoma and 4runners. In order to do that we moved the latch mechanism to the left side (not shown in the pictures yet). Also we located the new tow receiver higher up so it won't drag as much while offroading. The new tow receiver also has an extra reinforcement plate welded on the back. Unit will come assembled and powder coated stealth black.

Thanks for the ideas everyone - I ended up fitting my 285 underneath following some other threads but will be keeping all this in mind for 35’s or HC rear. Likely a swingout, or hitch mounted carrier to save weight - I really like the price point on the Detours of Maine carriers.
