HomerTaco's big old bucket o’ bolts build

My plan is to just slide the bed back the 12 to 24" back to gain access to the pump flange. I don't have the 'fix' on hand yet so I'm not sure exactly what I need to gain access to but I can assume that Ill need to pull the fuel pump out. It doesn't look like I need to slide the bed back too far or lift the bed up too high to gain access but when the time comes, Ill make sure to weigh my options before I hurt myself. I had a buddy of mine help remove the bed the last time I did it and it wasn't fun. We'll see when the time comes.

Moving the bed around is a bitch, you can support it with 2x4 cribbing on the frame though, to get yourself some extra space to work.

Any plans involving moving the bed also require moving the rear bumper, so it can turn into a long job just for the setup/take down before you actually start the project.

I ended up dropping my gas tank when I needed access to that stuff, just because lifting the bed was turning into a hassle.

 

I hear you on that, however, during my struggle session installing that driver-side middle angled bracket, I broke the captive nut-plate (the one that would secure the stock tank strap to the frame). Out of the entire project, that bolt took the longest and brought about the most flowery of choice words. Jack tank up slightly, quarter turn on bolt, jack tank up slightly, quarter turn on bolt - repeat ad-infinitum. Meanwhile, I had to jerry-rig up some weird ratchet extension to hold the captive nut in place, not fun. I am going to do everything in my power to not put myself through that again. With that said, I don't mind removing my bumper and tire gate swing out and everything that goes into removing the bed because forward progress is still progress. Kinda like sitting in stop and go traffic vs driving an additional 7 miles out of the way but still making forward progression at 55 mph.

The ratchet strap rigging I used to get my tank back in is part of the reason "osha has no power here" is written on the shop wall...

 

I really want to know what they were thinking when they designed the bracket like that. They could have fabricated up a simple triangle bracket that the tank bolts to. That would've saved an entire afternoon and well into the evening of struggle session on that one bolt. I ended up buying a second floor jack to help maneuver the tank around under the truck, and yes, ratchet straps were used.

Guess PA is much more relaxed about it.

I didn't even get to tell them what it meant to me. They just denied it. I called and asked why they denied it and that's when she told me why they denied it

 

Bummer. I guess I got lucky

 

That was the day we discovered that the BPF shop would benefit from an emergency eyewash station...

Homer, I know you don’t have the RTT setup anymore but you didn’t have any issues with it mounted on the cap long term with the weight up there on the cap did you?

I saw where you mentioned all was good back in 2015 so wondering how things were I guess as of the date of sale of the RTT.


2 adults and 2 toddlers (soon to be a 3rd) would be sleeping up there....well maybe not all of us, some might stay below in a tent.

Zero issues whatsoever. I initially had it set up on a thule rack system but then moved to a prinsu rack system.
Multiple camping trips with both set ups and no problems.
