Just picked up a Thinkpad T440p with a i7-4710MQ. At 47W, it's definitely a challenge keeping that cool in a laptop. Under Prime, it was hitting 100°C almost immediately. I'm assuming it had the original thermal paste, as it basically flaked off as I removed it. Just replaced it with some old Arctic Silver 5. The CPU runs about 15-20°C cooler now under load. (It's currently 70°F room temp) I'll give it some time to cure and see if it helps a little more. I'm basically using it as a home file server and occasional work horse. I'll have to look further into improving cooling or swap the CPU for a 4712MQ (37W). Slight hit in performance to run much cooler.

Curing might actually hurt performance. On a laptop the high heat onboard overall, flimsy support construction (comparatively to a desktop), and BGA array most laptop chips use can actually cause a good amount motherboard flex. Some hard curing pastes like AS5 can break contact on part of the chip and perform fairly poorly in a short amount of time. The Thinkpads are pretty solid construction but I'd keep an eye on it. I'd really lean towards using good long plasticity pastes like NT-H1 in laptops.
Just FYI Intel is dropping 500 series boards in January. Not that it matters much. A chip in hand is worth two in the bush.

Playing with a Chinese X99 V 1.02 Machinist with a Xeon 2699 V3. Working out very well so far. Board was $70, memory and CPU was in my stash of parts.

I tried the 2678 V3 and also worked well.

They do some fun and interesting stuff over in China with motherboards and chipsets. Course support can be wonky but still fun to see!

I don't anticipate any problems. The laptop will be stationary most of the time. It just sits in a corner and I access it remotely. I probably have some NT-H1 somewhere. I'm assuming it would have came with my NH-D15. I've undervolted the chip by about -120mv (still testing). It's knocked another 5°C off of the temps under load.

Beyond thrilled with the aesthetics and performance of this card. Still probably going to resell and bump up a tier, but Sapphire makes an incredible product with a clean UI.

Picked up a neat little device that measures the power used by USB devices.

This is 2 WD Passports on a USB 3.0 hub with no external power attached.

So today I learned about SMR vs CMR HDDs. If you're looking for performance stick with CMR. SMR drives are a cheap way for higher capacity and are slower in performance. Also not good for RAID.

Out with the brown, in with 5 Chromax fans that I've mayyyybe been too lazy to install for over a year o_O (2 for the CPU cooler, 1 for the top of the case, 2 in the front)
I have another coming in to replace my stock case fan as well.
