I took a chance on an Android Head Unit.

    https://www.joyingauto.com/joying-n...stereo-with-powerful-android-10-0-system.html

    IMG_2700.jpg

It has dual app side by side view, which is a nice.

    IMG_2696.jpg

It has a silver boarder around the screen that makes it look stock. There is no branding. The shiny reflection isn't as bad in real life. Screen is nice and bright. IMG_2700.jpg IMG_2696.jpg IMG_2697.jpg IMG_2698.jpg IMG_2699.jpg IMG_2701.jpg IMG_2702.jpg IMG_2703.jpg IMG_2704.jpg

The 4G antennas wedge nicely in here, so need to tape it to the dash incase I want to pull it out or resale. The GPS or 4G antennas don't rattle or slide.

    I used T-Mobile the 3-1 kit:
    https://www.t-mobile.com/cell-phone/t-mobile-sim-card

Having instant LTE is the way to go. Instant access to Spotify and not have to pull your phone out and connect via wifi is a slick first world problem thing. Having it connected to google maps is awesome with full search and type input is great. Plus, the 4g antennas are much stronger and pull better signal than my phone.

Wireless Carplay works, but having full fledged android running is so much better.

I previously had the factory head unit with upgraded Alpine speakers, sub, and after market amps.
The sound improvement is now waayyyyyy better than the factory. I can't compare it to Pioneer or Kenwood head units, but it is night and day improvement over the factory head unit. I bought the enfig mic.
https://enfigcarstereo.com/ENFIG_MIC_VW1.html. It works great. Others on this forum say it fits right in the factory location, but it doesn't slide in the factory slot perfect, but I got it wedged/taped in there well enough. Sounds great, so I have been told.

After some emails with Joying at purchase, it comes with a canbus to get factory stereo steering wheel controls. They are presumably re-mappable, but I haven't any luck remapping them. If anyone else can chime in, that would be nice.

On balance, this thing is awesome, but it does have some quirks.
The clock gets stuck unless you swipe down the top of the screen. So that is weird. The temp is also stuck on celsius always. I had to format my sd card in ntfs, otherwise it causes bootloops. I can't figure-out how to map steering wheel controls in the app for it, so I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

Another issue is the bluetooth calling app. At times the dialer/app is full screen during a call, and other times the dialer/app only covers the bottom third the screen. During either the full screen or bottom third, I can't get it to the background to continue navigating while on a call. Joying says clicking the steering wheel "Nav" button minimizes it, but I don't have a nav button and can't create one because I can't figure-out how to remap the steering wheel controls. Presumably this issue is fix-able though, but haven't successfully figured it out yet. A work around is to make calls through Carplay, then I can minimize that to the background, That then gives me access the full android system while on a call.

I recommend this unit. It is plug and play and was able to use the metal brackets. It came with usb adapter and canbus(purchased separately through Joying). I can't underscore enough on how it having it's own cellular connection is so great.

Let me know if anyone has any questions.

On normal roads it is solid. Haven't gone off road though.

That's pretty slick....and tempting considering they are half of what the popular Pioneer costs.

looking at the site you link to for purchasing, it looks like they have add-ons like OBD2 and TPMS - do you need these to get the details from the vehicle to display? If you have the android app working, wouldn't it work through Bluetooth with the obd2 scanner I have? Sorry for the newb question and TIA for the help.

Also, I LOVE the idea of the 4G integrated! I have t-mobile for my regular cell provider. Is this the equivalent of adding another line or what service are you paying for and how much does it cost?

I ordered 9” today with obd and backup camera. Look at Joying site under accessories, shows the TPMS and such. Still not sure how the OBD will work out but I went for it.
I have AT&T and they want 20 bux month for data. There’s a way to make the Tacoma a wifi hot spot but thats too expensive as well. Definitely interested in cheaper alternative myself. Cloning sim card? ?

At purchase you also buy the https://www.joyingauto.com/dhl-shipping-fee.html postage add-on accessory and email them a pic of your dash and your order number and they will ship the unit with a vehicle specific canbus. It is weird process to be sure. The canbus is prewired into the wire harness and it allows the vehicle to provide the basic vehicle details (including TPMS) that use to show up on the factory radio, but nothing more. It also allows the steering wheel controls to function. The OBD2 gives deeper details, presumably error codes, and more details in real time through the Torque app. I did buy the OBD2 adaptor, but I don't really use it. I think tuners mainly use it, or folks that understand the raw numbers to get a sense if the vehicle is in tip top shape. You likely only need the canbus.

The 4g SIM I bought is cheaper than a "new line"- it is a tablet data only add-on (that can be bought separately - I did, I have Verizon). It is $10 for 2 gigs a month prepaid. You have to buy $10 sim to start.

Make sure to get the canbus, and just go with T-Mobiles 3-1 kit. I walked into tmobile, took 5 mins, in and out. AT&T may not even work and is way more expensive.

I emailed Joying a pic of factory and the link above is what they sent stating its plug and play. Yea ordered the obd2 figuring someday i may regret not getting it. Not so sure will hook up backup camera either but i can. After seeing their tpms system i knew I could live without that.
    Will check out T-mobile, thanks

I don't see that as an option anywhere.... am I missing something?

    Is this the right harness?
    https://www.joyingauto.com/joying-toyota-special-harness-with-can-bus-decoder.html

Do I buy the head unit and the harness, and it should be plug and play?

It is plug and play, but that isn't the right canbus. There isn't a canbus link, instead it's the following link:

    https://www.joyingauto.com/dhl-shipping-fee.html
It is weird, you buy postage, instead of the canbus. But add this to cart and then email joying with order number and pics of dash.
    They sent me the following:

    thumbnail.jpg

It may come pre-wired like the following, which is wrong. You need to connect the "canin+canout" wire, not "key+canout" like below.

    IMG_2658.jpg

After that, choose the canbus setting as below:thumbnail (1).jpg

There will be two or three harness plugs that are unused depending if you have regular or jbl amp at factory. They use the same harness for both the regular factory harness and the JBL amp harness. Make sure to plug the rear cam into the harness you are plugging in, as opposed to an unused harness plug. This should seems obvious, but the are several youtubers that mess this up, so I mention it.

thanks for the heads up, just emailed Joying to make sure I get the right canbus. They already seem pissed off at me for so many questions so what the hell.

i see it now, you linked the universal 10.1. The one I ordered and linked above is vehicle specific for Tacoma. I will let ya’s know what Joying says when I get a response

    Here’s the reply from Joying

You do not need to buy the extra harnes adapter. and your car do not need the canbus decoder because you do not have the JBL amplifier.
So the head unit comes with the harness adapter will be workable for you.

Well that will save $40. Maybe the canbus is effecting my inability to remap the steering wheel controls. Let me know if it works for you and I'll likely pull the canbus out. Will you lose the vehicle options through the radio, like TPMS?

Keep us posted. It also looks like you have a 2nd gen based on your profile. Wonder if that is the difference?

Very close to pulling the trigger on this. Looks awesome!

yes you are correct, I have the 2nd gen. That explains the canbus. I forgot OP installed the unit in a 3rd gen, my bad.
I will still continue to update in this thread. The functionality of the unit should be the same. The review from OP and other reviews i looked at are good, so I imagine mine will be too. User error will be my downfall

so I've been getting ready to purchase and then I saw that this comes in a double din model too. can I ask why you purchased the single din version instead of the double din?
