In the past I would say buy a common caliber so you can easily find ammo but today those are the hard to find calibers and the oddball caliber ammo is plentiful. I would buy something that is pleasant to shoot since shot placement is most important. If you're out west or somewhere that long range shots are common then maybe a 300 win mag or some equivalent newer round.

No doubt. Any of my six 7-08s would kill a brown bear, but I'm not using any of them for the task if I have a choice. Been up close and personal to far too many bear for that. When you can feel the ground shake as they run toward you, nothing seems too big at the time.

Again, the question was best all around for deer, elk, moose, and bear. My favorite .250 savage will work on all, but it doesn't mean it's the best all around choice. A good sensible choice would be the upper half of the 7mms and up in power and range for a best all around use gun.

I still think there is no fun in having an all around gun. The best choice is one for the particular use envisioned. Four or five at least.
