Secondary Air Pump ??

I am seeing some scuttlebut regarding a secondary air pump and it having a filter etc. I did some searching and not sure of some things. Mine is a 14 4.0L. Is there a filter I should be cleaning? I hear of a mod. What does this do? Do I need to be concerned with failure of it? I'm right at 80k miles. Thank you in advance for info...

 

Yes your '14 has the secondary air injection, it's the the right of the motor (left side as you look into the engine bay from the front) behind the air intake hose going into the fender.

It has a foam filter that breaks down and gets sucked into the pump, not a cleaning issue but an integrity issue.

The pump is part of the '11+ emissions system.

The mod is to remove the factory filter and fit a "K&N" style mini cone filter.

The failure can cause a check engine light due to faulty emissions secondary injection pump failure.

80k/8 years is about the time the oem ones fail as far as I know.

The 05-10 does not have the secondary injection system.

The secondary air injection system does nothing more than intake atmospheric air and inject it into the exhaust to cool the exhaust and dilute the exhaust particle concentration in order to pass emissions laws of that year and beyond, It's effectively a loophole and realistically does nothing to reduce emissions overall.

 

Interesting... Is the filter mod a pretty simple one to do?

 

Plenty of threads on here about it, it takes 5 minutes To change out once you take the cover off pull out the old brittle foam that’s what breaks off and damages the fan component.

 

Just get HPTuners and get rid of.... You’ll never have to worry about SAIS again and you’ll be able to scan your truck and optimize for modification (engine, speed calibration, etc) if you go that route.

Has anyone that has done this mod seen any change in MPG ?

Removal of the SAIS doesn't affect mileage at all. The tune doesn't really impact mileage either, some say they get 1-2mpg better but for me it was no measurable change and I have been using fuelly since day one of my truck. Heavy ass 33" made my mileage much worse! But I expected that. lol

That is an option, but if you already have a tune using HPTuners it gives you the option to just completely remove the system which has a few benefits. Less components to fail long term, less stuff under the hood, less weight (I would say 20-25lbs, though it's negligible on trucks like ours) and more room for activities under the hood especially if you plan to add a 2nd battery or the fact that any 05-15 aftermarket air intake will fit because you do not have to worry about provisions for the SAIS pump if you want to go down those routes. I know this mod isn't for everybody. But if you already have HPTuners, it is an option. If you don't have a tune using HPTuners, you should find someone who does and take it for a spin. There is a very big difference in drivability after it is tuned, honestly it makes the throttle response and trans characteristics the way it should have been from the factory plus a little bit better power, not much though on a stock truck.

i have a '12 and hate that fucking thing. it's right where an ARB compressor should be. i live in CA so touching it is akin to a capital offense, per the DMV. i put the cute little filter on and the tech was asking questions about it when i got smogged last. i told him about the TSB and was stoked that i got out of there with a pass. meticulous rules are meticulous.

 

You just gotta keep the mods internal. You cannot fail what you don't see and as long as there is no check engine light, smoking out clouds of black or white smoke at first rev up, anything is possible. You just need to know what you're doing.

 

i reckon i could figure out how to do the delete, but passing visual inspection after removing the pump would not likely fly. they are vultures. eagle-eyed vultures.

The SAI is a story entirely of its own, but If you are well intent on running an air compressor, there is TONS of space on the frame rail of the passenger side below. Why not run it there?

You can also always relocate the SAI pump by the power steering pump, but you will need some brackets and extend wiring to do so.

 

i like where the slee mount puts the dual compressor. there's not tons of room under my hood, hence, my reason for disliking that pump.

How well trained are the techs and what are their visual references? Only reason I ask is when the system is removed it doesn't look like there was anything there in the first place looks like the 05-11 Tacoma's minus the tubes on the exhaust manifolds. Since the system is bypassed (but still operational if hooked up) through HPTuners it wouldn't show any abnormalities in when the computer is plugged in so the tech wouldn't see any issues that would make him peruse a deeper inspection.

This is more out of my own curiosity since we do not have any vehicle inspections in any of the states surrounding me.

 

The filter isn't the only reason for the pump failure, there are internal issues with the pump it's self. When mine failed the filter was 100% still intact.

Toyota has been replacing the pumps covered under the TSB with a redesigned one.

 

The guy at the last shop knew to look for the system on my '12 because he mentioned the aftermarket filter I installed. Not sure whether he just knew about my model year, noticed the filter, or was comparing to a schematic. There are likely less vigorous inspectors at other shops.

 

It goes a step further. Your truck when connected via OBD is going to tell the computer system what emissions systems are on the vehicle then the tech knows what SHOULD be on the vehicle and what to check for. Like stated, even the UNI filter is technical grounds to fail inspection.


Also FYI, its on the 12+ v6's not 11+ v6s like mentioned earlier.
