Yeah, the industry is playing up the covid angle, and siding with vails boilerplate bullshit, but they are very much on strike.

I work for a large ski shop, located in the first major town outside of the ski towns.

At the end of the day I had a guy come in who is a long time chef at the main restaurant at the mtn. He confirmed that patrol was on strike. Also gave many examples of long time employees who were fired by vail for no reasons.

He had said vail tried getting ski patrol from Mt snow, Okemos, big boulder and other eastern vail properties to come cover, but is struggling to get them to help. So they are now planning on flying in patrol from Colorado and elsewhere to get the mtn open.

He is scheduled to work tomorrow, but won't find out till the morning if he needs to report to work. Hopefully nobody here has a ticket reservation and trying to find out if they can go.

    Day 13

It’s definitely odd times. Safty and Partrol seem pretty consistent on mask mandates on the premises. Tailgating is no an actual pretty happening thing. We keep to our “pods” but do talk. The 4Runner couple are my consistent lot neighbors.

Beautiful shot of the inversion in the valley. What are the uphill travel
rules at White Face? Ive always wanted to skin up the toll rd, and ski the bowl. Is one allowed to ski back inbounds?

Thanks! For inbounds uphill, it's Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday 6:00-8:00AM. It's pretty structured compared to other places. https://whiteface.com/todo/uphill-program

As far as dropping in from the toll road, I don't know what the official policy is, but I would guess that they don't want people doing it. The toll road and resort are about 6 miles apart, so you'd need a ride or car spot to make that work anyway.

Can one skin up the resort and duck the rope into the bowl? Guessing if it’s before the mountain open that may be ok?
I’ve never driven the toll rd, would it even make sense to go that route and shuttle or just head up the resort?

On skinning days, ski patrol is up at the top of the mountain at 6:00AM. I think because the resort is state owned, they're super concerned about liability, so they keep a pretty close watch on things. I don't think ski patrol ever opens the slides before 10:00AM.

To get to the slides (or any other part of the resort) from the road, you'd have to take a hiking trail from the road. You wouldn't have to be on the hiking trial for very long before you started down hill. I've heard that when there's enough snow you can ski right from the hiking trail. Other times, you'd have to bushwhack some to get to a spot to start skiing.

Back at Whiteface this year. I was getting a pass at Killington the last 5 years or so. New baby and Covid kept me here in NY. Nice to be back!

I am heading to Saddleback for the weekend. I am beyond excited to get back up there!

Anyone been back since they re-opened? How is it?

You'll have to be the guinea pig I think. I plan on making it there this year, but I've got a seasons pass at sugarloaf to get my use out of first.

It was cold one today. It’s nice to have so much snow. Last year was terrible.

I think we may try and hit 3 areas today. Our ski passes are good at all 3. Laurel Mountain, Hidden Valley and Seven Springs.

This place is actually pretty awesome. We ride our mountain bikes around here in the warmer months.
