I am hearing some droning while I am not accelerating. It’s not a grind and i can’t feel it. I only hear it when my foot is off the gas.

I feel it’s just reverb off my full set of skids but I feel it is working bring up.

Over the last year, I’ve replaced both from wheel bearings, ujoints, carrier bearing etc so basically everything is new.

I also have a Detroit trutrac in the rear and i feel it could be coming from that being open when no power is sent to the rear wheels.

Figured I’d ask and see if anyone else has this cause I don’t ride in a lot of other kitted Tacoma’s.

    good questions!

drone sounds like it’s coming middle to rear of the truck

once I push on the gas I can feel the trutrac engage and it goes away regardless of rpms

I can hear it better with windows up because there is too much wind noise with the windows down

4.10 nitro gears with trutrac and together they have about 70k on them

As long as I can remember, it has made this sound but I can’t remember if it made it before the new rear end.

I used to have this rear end in my pertinent and swapped it over to my current truck. My brain is telling me, it made this drone sound in my prerunner too but I can’t prove it

Hmmm interesting. ECGS did all the gear work on it.

I haven’t changed the rear wheel bearings but I assume I’ll have to by next year. The needle bearing in the front diff has been replaced. What bearing are you referring too?

I can deal with the noise and it’s been good till now so I’ll run it till it breaks then go 4.56. I’ll keep an eye on it till then

    Thanks for all the information!

Any recommendations on quality gear shops in Denver that I can have a tech take a ride and determine if it’s a bad pinion?

Update : ECGS said it’s not normal and is still under warranty so now I just need to find a place to remove the third member because my apartment complex wouldn’t appreciate me doing it in the parking lot..

    Update:

went to Colorado Gear and Axle today for a diagnostic. Al immediately said rear end was thrashed. His opinion is that the Pinion Bearing is thrashed and gears are probably worn very poorly. As a result, it needs to be rebuilt.

This aligns with @In4aride analysis! Well done and thanks for the help.

Next steps - pull the third member and send to ECGS for a warranty rebuild.

yeah it sucks because it isn’t convenient and the downtime associated. I can’t do it in my apartment complex parking lot and due to the trutrac, they just can’t charge me a core charge and send me a replacement third member.

    @In4aride

After getting my third member out and reviewing the inside of the pumpkin, I notice a difference in the metal pieces inside the pumpkin.

Passenger is tight to the housing and the driver seems to me pryed out away from the housing. I assume this isn’t normal?

below are the pics. I am referring to the arches

Below is a video of the play that I have found in the rear diff after removing

After reviewing a bit more, I was able to adjust the axle and the metal part in the pumpkin to seat properly.

    @In4aride

here is a video of the metal bracket inside the pumpkin... you can see PS is secure and DS is loose. Both wheel assemblies are bolted back up and put together

Research says they are oil baffles and supposed to be springy but is driver too loose? It seems very loose relative to passenger side.

So I was mainly focusing on the sound. I was wiggling it side to side. But couldn’t move the flange move up and down

    UPDATE 1:

I have removed the third member and shipped it off to ECGS. While inspecting, i noticed a loose oil baffle on the driver side. After researching it, there was a Tundra TSB about a loose baffle causing a "growl/whine" and this was because the baffle was rubbing on the axle shaft.

I inspected my driver side axle and sure enough there was wear on the axle where the baffle was rubbing it.

Below is a picture of my driver side oil baffle axle wear:
    IMG_2458.jpg

Below is a picture of the Tundra TSB:

    IMG_2459.jpg

Before i began this process, I went to Colorado Gear and Axle for a diagnostics. This is a nice family owned shop and both the father and son were very helpful and not pushy from experience so i do trust their analysis. They said something is right in the differential and most likely the pinion bearing and uneven gear wear. They said if ECGS will cover it under warranty then let them inspect and fix it.

After i inspected and saw the oil baffle wear on the axle, i called them back and let them know of my findings. They said that the oil baffle could have contributed to some of the noise but they still feel the differential is the route cause due to the changes in volume upon deceleration.

At first i was questioning if i sent the differential to ECGS for no reason because the issue could have been the oil baffle. However after talking to CGA, i feel its best to let ECGS inspect the differential for pinion bearing wear, play, or abnormal gear wear. Worst case, i pay for return shipping from ECGS because there was no issue with the differential but i get peace of mind so still a win.

As for sourcing a new oil baffle, that was a challenge because it is not clearly defined on diagrams and is a special order product. After being persistent and convincing the parts person to lookup a TSB for a tundra for this baffle, they were able to find it. Funny thing is that TSB called it a "rear differential axle housing oil baffle" and after they looked it up using the TSB, they called it a "deflector"

General part number without providing my VIN is - Differential Drive Pinion Oil Deflector (Rear) Part Number: 4213935021

Hopefully this help someone in the future. I will report back analysis of the differential by ECGS.

    UPDATE 2:

According to diagrams, the above part number does NOT seem to be correct so part number is still unknown...

if anyone knows the part number, please share

    UPDATE

I have heard back from ECGS and they said the whole diff seemed to be "burnt up". They said bearing and gears were toasted.. which is very odd because I have only ran Lucas or Amsoil severe gear oil in the diff. Both of which ECGS said were okay.

I am baffled because i followed the break-in procedure to the "T" and i have had the diff for 3 years now so its not like i messed that up and its just now causing an issue.

I do wheel pretty hard sometimes but i know other people who wheel way harder so i wouldnt expect that to really be an issue.

Either way, ECGS has rebuilt the diff and taken care of the issue.

Installed the new third and went for an initial breakin drive. MAN! this thing drives completely different! No more slop, droning or humming. Tbh, I can’t remember it ever driving like this even when I originally put the gears in 2 years ago.

Hopefully, this set will last longer than 2 years.
