2017 Limited w/ JBL system. Is there a way to add carplay to the factory stereo?

I've looked into all of the options I've found, and it seems like one of the more popular methods is to buy one of those weird Chinese head units that runs Android as it's operating system.

But I don't want to take the vehicle too far from stock, or lose any of the stock features like GPS in the cluster. Or buy a stereo that has zero manufacturer support once you own it.

Is there an official adapter to add carplay? Or are these chinese head units really good and I should stop worrying?

I'm not opposed to using an aftermarket stereo, but I don't want to lose any factory features, and I would just go with sony/ alpine, but I don't want an aftermarket trim ring around the stereo.

    What has been your experience?

    I have the 2017 JBL.

No dice. Head unit is not supported for Android Auto or Car Play.

You'll hear a lot of recommendations for a Joying head unit, but I'm not sure it applies to JBL.

It seems a tad janky yeah, but I think it's piggy backing on the aux selection signal to enable the A/V hijack for carplay. And I might be SUPER wrong here, but I think the act of switching to AUX tells their comp "hey it's time to carplay". The A/V I don't think is on the aux channel.

I went with a Pioneer DMH-WC6600NEX, you lose the center cluster compass but with the maestro unit you can retain everything else. I was able to mount it pretty flush with my stock JBL trim, there is a long thread for these as well https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/new-pioneer-dmh-wc6600nex-flush-mount-install.668580/.

I just finished adding a 2020 radio to my 2019. Everything works perfectly. Find a cheap one on fb marketplace or eBay and then contact autoharnesshouse and they'll get you the harness for conversion and the harness to make the usb port work. 175 for the two harnesses + whatever you spend on the radio.
