You might want to re-visit that conversation and see if there are more options...

I don't fish so a boat won't do me any good.
3 ways never have a good ending in the long run.

Probably better not to press my luck. Be happy a little Hell has frozen over, and not try and freeze more of it over.

please don’t get me started on that. Haha.
On a related thread topic, I think the ammo situation is highly regional.
Most places within a 25-35 mile range are out, or have some 9mm,556,or 308 for $1 per round.
Hopefully demand eases up a little. Lotta new shooters out there with not much to practice with.
I stocked up years ago with more than I think I’ll ever shoot, but it always felt great adding another 1K rounds.

When money is not a issue, get a expensive weapon.

As I said money is not an issue, but it is. I can afford $100 steaks but I don't see the value in spending that kind of money when a $25 steak eats mighty fine.
And I could get a Class 3 license and drop several Thousand on a M60. But I'd rather spend the money and get several weapons instead.

By the way if those 2 are yours. Nice!

Those are kind pointless because it’s semi auto. In California nobody has machine gun license.

Who cares about a license. CA is a failed state, buy what you want, when the shit hits the fan, you'll be glad to have it. A reckoning is coming and it's going to be biblical. Be safe and good luck.

An AR, your preferred 9 or .45 sidearm, a tactical shotgun with slugs and/or buckshot (if you have a shotgun, you need to understand how and why to store it in "cruiser ready" state), and optimally some small platform handgun caliber rifle like a CMMG. although I like it in 10mm, it's wise to consolidate calibers and stockpile ammo. 10 is a little hot for a tactical handgun and has a hell of a flash in a dark setting. Best case would be every person who can handle a gun has a rifle, a sidearm, training, and you as a family have a cohesive and legally defensible response plan. Any gun is better than no gun and I would be comfortable with my .357 revolver and lever action or a .22 in a pinch. As I recall, there was no problem Chuck Connors couldn't solve with his lever action and side arm.

Are you ready to shoot to protect yourself/your family, are you willing to use violence of action, and do you have the self control not to make threats or shoot indiscriminately? You are responsible for anything that bullet touches. For me, the only time an intruder would see a gun is less than 2 seconds before I shoot. I don't make threats, I don't fire warning shots, I won't go outside my home over a trespasser. Shooting really is a last resort.

Does your home have layers of security? This should be your first line of defense. We have exterior cameras and lights (that illuminate the exterior like a park) and sprinklers that can be controlled from any smartphone or tablet. The cars are garaged. We have very secure doors plus security doors, a secured breaker box and phone/data box, locked gates, dogs, and the pathways around the house are gravel. You cannot walk on it silently and there is nothing else to walk on. It alerts the dogs and if so much as a opossum walks across it at night, it wakes me up (usually to find my dogs killing a opossum). The idea is to make the house too much of a risk. Criminals are lazy POS and will pick an easy target. If you are referring to the societal unrest issues; remember, most of these mental midgets are trying to bait you into a conflict or a legal violation. Don't feed the bears. Lights off, blinds closed, no response. They only act upon what you give them. If you are think a natural disaster, look up some videos about Katrina and guns. My cousin lived in New Orleans during that. It was an eye opener.

If someone does decide to try me, I run drills periodically to make sure I can get a firearm and put it into action, operate the exterior lights, and secure the premises. I usually do this in the middle of the night and on a whim because I got up to pee. The dog hears me, he's on patrol for the next hour. The lights go on and he is looking for an intruder. I am the last thing between my wife and daughter and some DB criminal. I could care less what goes on outside or what happens to property. That's what insurance is for. However, once the house is breached, I am going to bring that fight as fast and hard as I can. I don't ever want to shoot someone and would only do so if they put me in a position of defend or die. breaching the exterior of my home is that position. Training is important because it is what you will fall back on under stress. I heard a story once about a CHP officer who died in a shootout. He was found with a handful of brass and an empty weapon. He was trained to remove the spent brass from his revolver and place it in his pocket to keep the range clean. It's what he did in a gun fight because the training prioritized a clean range instead of fast reloading and getting back in the fight. Train to fight and will to survive are paramount.

Finally, I don't draw attention to myself. I don't put campaign signs in my yard, I don't put stickers on my truck to tell others about myself or what I like or believe in. I don't post on social media other than TW. I don't pick fights, flip off people, play music loudly, or even talk to many others. Don't join a militia or other, similar group; most are infiltrated with law enforcement or others. I try to keep a low profile. Become utterly forgettable. It's safer and you are less likely to be targeted. No one really wins in a conflict, especially one with shooting. It's a last resort. I don't do this because I'm afraid, I do it because I'm smart. People who run their mouths to the neighbors, have road rage issues, engage in political battles with others, talk too much, or are generally obnoxious, "skyline" themselves. They stand out and they get targeted first. Watch some of that monkey business in Portland, Seattle, and other places and it's a good tutorial on what not to do.

Well said, we also have dogs, lights, etc. I was talking to my neighbor and he said he wasn't afraid of my dogs, I told him, it's not the dogs that you need to be afraid of. The dogs let the owner with the 12 gauge auto pump know something is not right. My entire property is fenced in, and I told him that I will give you a $100 bucks if you can get in and back out of the front yard. My dogs are socialized and friendly, but know when they need to get it on. He started walking up to the fence, got about 3 feet from it, and the 1st shepherd came unglued, then the 2nd shepherd almost came over the fence, he walked back over and just said "well you have big dogs". I just laughed. Both dogs calmed down after he walked away and just watched us talk.

Totally agree with you about not taking the fight to some POS, but if someone tries to do harm to me or my family, it's game on. Our home has never been broken into, but I have had a car and a motorcycle stolen. Just replaced them. We legally carry and our dogs travel with us whenever they can. Be safe and don't be afraid to protect yourself. It's going to get worse before it gets better. Take care TW.

I have had a similar experience with our dogs. Periodically, we get "alarm" sales guys cold calling. I think they are really just casing possible burglary targets. My standard answer is, " Not interested, we have security, my wife and I carry, and our dogs would tear up an intruder" One guy says, "Oh, people's dogs almost never go after anyone and usually just run off" I told him to go say "Hi" on the way out. He tried the sudden movement thing thinking the dog would bolt. Cooper went nuts. I though he might come over the gate He has a very loud and forceful bark and does this thousand yard stare thing with people he doesn't like that is unnerving. We didn't get him to be a guard dog. We were looking for a dog to be a companion to our yellow lab. This guy was 2 times in the shelter (puppy, then later returned as an adult) who was a 75 lb APBT/Catahoula mix who was unsocialized, probably abused, and just needed a break. We took him on and as he progressed, we discovered he aggressively guards his home and people. I honestly think an intruder would have to kill him to get past him. This dog runs toward the fight not from it.

One thing I do, which may not be too smart is to make sure when I see suspicious people in the neighborhood is to make sure they see me. I'll stand there in the driveway or on the sidewalk and just stare/glare at them. I'll say, "You looking for something"? They almost never have an answer and move off. I've lived here 25 years and have worked from home for the last year. I pretty much know who lives or has business here and who doesn't. I once had a guy (an adult) in a homeboy uniform and riding a kids MX bike (which is the parolee MO here) stop across the street and start taking pictures of that house and make a phone call. I was doing yard work at the time. I stopped and stared at him. Eventually, he made this "what" gesture and I said "Why don't you roll your parolee ass on down the road. You want to break into that house? I know what you look like and your face is on video". He gave me the finger and left. This idiot stood out and thought no one would notice. Criminals don't like to be spotted. Letting them know they have is a small deterrent.
