I didn't see a thread in the forums about electric cars so here it is. If you don't like them fine but don't hate on the members that do. We all know their current range and infrastructure limitations so no need to rehash all that. But there is no doubt, EV's are here to stay.

Anyway, Toyota has a test vehicle right now (see pic) so they are obviously interested in moving to an EV truck option. Also Tesla has a Model S refresh. Do you have an EV on your wishlist?

EV's are fine for short range (relative to gasoline or diesel powered) commuting. They still fail at any distance and so far none has any sort of useful payload. I expect things will improve, but I also expect the cost of such vehicles will remain well above that of a comparable petroleum powered vehicle.

The only thing that I do wish the manufacturers would do it give a realistic explanation of the electricity to charge the vehicles is produced. The whole zero emissions is BS.

True about charging emissions but if you get electric delivered via nuclear then there is no additional emissions for charging.

Yea, no emissions but there is that darn tens of thousands of years disposal issue. And of course there were those places in Russia and Japan that give one pause.

Well in time these issue will need to be permanently addressed. Solar, wind, Geothermal, hydro alternatives need further development. It will happen but not anytime soon.

if the company that developed and blessed this world with the land cruiser line up is out there testing an EV land cruiser

i would have faith in a 70 series EV

very glad to see toyota testing this out, because a lot of the other EV 4x4 things i have seen are not too appetizing

The RIVIAN is totally designed for off road, overlanding etc. so I am glad they went to the extreme for mild off roading but the front design I don't like. Everything else on it is very thought out.

    Nope.

I would consider one for local use, but that's it. And I'd consider a hybrid first.

As mentioned, the emissions deal isn't anywhere near the magic the pundits promote.

As far as environmental issues go, the impacts from new production (of any vehicle) are pretty high, especially compared to the impacts of disposal of older vehicles.

And what will be done with the 'dead batteries'? They will die.

What I do like is EV drag racing. Those are a hoot.

And we all know what trains are capable of pulling/carrying. But they have direct generation, not batteries.

I’m excited to see the price of solar panels dropping. Since you can get a used 200w panel here in Phoenix for under 50 bucks, curious if anyone out there has a homemade charging station?

People said all of the same negative things when gasoline powered vehicles starting replacing horses. Change is the only thing that is constant in this world. We are in a transitional stage right now and I'd not want an EV. But if I live long enough they will perfect them and they will be better than what we're driving now. But at 63 I may never own one. I'll be close to 80 by the time they get them perfected. My kids and grandkids will own one someday, and that's OK.

I'm 50 and I think by the time I get to own one there will be more vehicle brand options i.e. Toyota etc.and lower initial cost. A Tesla Model 3 can be had for $37k before state and federal incentives.

    Interesting...on the Rivian

Post #11, the range is 400 miles.
Post #13, the range is 300 miles.

I'm curious about how long to recharge when the maximum range (300 or 400 miles) is reached? How long do the occupants relax on their road trip during recharge?

The SUV uses the Large battery pack as standard I"m assuming because of the added weight of the SUV compared to the Pickup.

Yeh I"d like to know that also. I'll have to look that up.
