U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration intends to relax limits on tailpipe emissions that are designed to get Americans to move from gas-powered cars to electric vehicles, the New York Times reported, citing people familiar with the plan.

The administration would give car manufacturers more time instead of requiring them to rapidly ramp up sales of electric vehicles over the next few years, the report said, adding that the new rule could be published by early spring.

The shift would mean that EV sales would not need to rise sharply until after 2030.

John Bozzella, president and CEO of auto industry trade group the Alliance for Automotive Innovation (AAI), said on Sunday that the next three or four years are critical for the development of the EV market.

“Give the market and supply chains a chance to catch up, maintain a customer’s ability to choose, let more public charging come online, let the industrial credits and Inflation Reduction Act do their thing and impact the industrial shift,” Bozzella said.

Reuters previously reported that the White House could enact proposed Environmental Protection Agency regulations as soon as March that would mandate dramatic reductions in tailpipe emissions. The administration proposal would require boosting U.S. EV market share to 67% by 2032 from less than 8% in 2023.

General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis — the European parent of U.S.-based Ram and Jeep — have warned they cannot profitably transition their truck-heavy U.S. fleets that quickly, according to a Reuters analysis of automakers’ sales data and a review of comments to regulators.

Automakers and the AAI have urged the Biden administration to slow the proposed ramp-up in EV sales. They have said EV technology is still too costly for many mainstream U.S. consumers, and more time is needed to develop the charging infrastructure.

Akio Toyoda, the president and CEO of the Toyota Motor Corporation, will relinquish his position as head of the Japanese automaker on April 1, the company announced today. Toyoda, 66, will become the chairman of the board of directors, with current chairman Takeshi Uchiyamada retiring, although he will remain a member of the board. Toyoda is the grandson of the company's founder, Kiichiro Toyoda, and has been the CEO since 2009.

I think that the infrastructure for full electric vehicle fleet from such a huge corporation is practically nonexistent. Hybrid maybe.

The irony is the site I work at is on its on power grid powered by two massive diesel engine.

 

It's more of a "politically correct" position than a realistic position. Ford seems to be on the same track. Their commercial comes very close to saying they are not "climate deniers", so as not to run that risk of backlash. It's definitely the subtext. I suspect the manufactures waited to see how the elections would lean and adjusted their approach to suit. They don't want to end up with a bunch of push back over energy issues. Because all of this is a goal, they may not meet it and, in that case would likely blame factors outside their control. If you really think about it there will be a massive economical shift in terms of jobs, parts, vendors, lots of things. Everything seems to sway with the political winds. It would be interesting to know if they had other commercials and announcements ready if things went differently. Companies have to navigate lots of brave new world stuff to survive. It's much harder than just making a good product these days.

 

Yup. Had a conversation with a very self-righteous Tesla driver at work. I simply asked her if she knew how we make electricity here and if she knew where the plastics and electronic components for her car came from. It was an awakening. She's sure all that will be solved though. Well, if wishes were fishes and all...

 

She might be using electricity we sold her, BC makes it with Hydro/dams.

 

My crystal ball says we're going to have all of these electric cars, but no way to charge them. Wind and solar will not get the job done...not even close. We're shutting down coal powered plants, and aren't building any new nuclear power plants. Our national energy policy is retarded.

Recommend having your kids/grandkids keep at least one gasoline powered vehicle if they want to get to work, dine out, or make it to a store.

 

GM goes totally bankrupt prior to 2035, is another way to write that.

Puerto Rico Just might have the best power grid system in the next couple of years. We need to re-examine how electric-power moves throughout municipalities, states etc.

Anyone price out a Tesla roof lately? Maybe GM will get in that game?

 

Southern California. that electricity was made by natural gas turbines. She thinks it's all wind and solar here. That's a small part. It's largely natural gas.

The whole charging time thing is going to be the big problem, then making enough electricity. We'll see what happens.

The charging thing will be a nightmare though. My cousin has VW golf Electric and she has a hard time driving any long distance. it sucks for range.

 

I dont think Tesla has even come close to turning a profit selling cars yet, they mess around making money with some kind of carbon credits or something though. They do have some interesting ideas, the roof thing seems pretty neat.

Electric cars clearly have amazing acceleration, but the tech just isn't there yet for high speed driving. The biggest problem is the weight, those things are HEAVY and can't go nearly as fast as a vette.

Like the C7 Corvette back in 2013, the 2020 Corvette makes 650 hp after being upgraded with a Nitrous Express system as well as new Hennessey stainless steel exhaust. Hennessey also removed the rear wing from the Z51 Coupe which on a stock C8 Corvette has a top speed of 184 mph vs 194 mph without the wing.May 18, 2020
