So I’ve got a 2020 limited with the factory jbl system. Has anyone upgraded the jbl speakers without touching the amp? Is it worth it?

Not worth it at all. The JBL speakers are surprisingly well-paired to that amp. Swap them and prepare for a let down.

for the JBL system, I generally consider it a full gut. Either replace it all or don’t touch it.

    Well, that answers that.
I'm gonna get freekin' FLAMED here, but after all the 'Toyota Sound System SUCKS!!!!' posts I've read ...I've actually found the factory sound system to be way better than all the 'IT SUCKS!!!' other posts.. I find it pretty good actually.
I have zero idea what speakers are installed in the doors/posts/dash whatever, other than they came from from the factory.
    I have NO complaints.
(Spoiler: I'm not expecting anyone to hear my bass from 4 blocks away, so there's that...)

It’s miles ahead of the non-premium system lol. It’s not going to compare to luxury vehicle premium systems, but it’s also not a luxury vehicle.

I love the sound of the JBL.

Only wish we could turn up volume a little more for us hard of hearing spa music types.

I just did with my 2020 Limited. I bought the dash speakers on Amazon and the 2ohm powerbass from Crutchfield. Impressed with the sound quality and cannot believe the weight difference with the magnets. Its almost like the stock speakers are junk. Now I am interested in looking for options for the subwoofer.

I understand that upgrading the amp is a big challenge and investment if you want to keep your JBL head unit.

I had an audio shop do the install. The dash speakers are out of scope for my skillset.

I did a full gut of my jbl system in my 2017 and new headunit/amp and couldn’t be happier with it. It was annoying running new wires but not awful. Apparently you can reuse the wires if you stick to 75 rms max.

    My setup
    JL audio xl 700/2 amp
Jl audio 10” truck non ported/enclosed sub
    Audiofrog 6x9
    Audiofrog gb15
Pioneer nex 6600 headunit running active crossovers

Sound stage is real and it’s the best sounding car audio I’ve ever heard.

Thank you and glad it worked out. I am looking to keep my head unit though.

True, the factory JBL sound system doesn't suck. It just doesn't sound good.

I have JBL 18 Sport and I installed the JBL GTO939 6x9 in my front doors and I tell ya I couldn't believe they didn't sound any better. I wouldn't say they were worse than factory but Def not any better. GTO939 are coaxial and true woofer or mid component needs to go there to line up with signal amp is putting out if need replaced. I'm taking them out and putting factory back in.
I replaced 8" sub with 4-ohm dvc Kicker compC8 wired to 2-ohm and again I was not impressed and probably will be returning it as well. Why can't we connect a reg LOC to sub input wire and give it its own amp without a dsp? Would a class D amp not do the job?

i upgraded the stock JBL to JBL gx series and fosgate sub... needless to say the speakers sounds almost the same and i ended up putting the factory sub back in... pretty sure the factory amp cant handle it... i kept the gx series in the truck but now the bass hit is off... 2ohms to 2.3ohms makes a slight difference in sound... so now im gonna suck it up and save to just get the oem audio plus...

@DansTacoSR5 @tommygs3 your mistake was only replacing the speakers. The JBL speakers aren’t terrible, but the JBL amp IS terrible. Changing the speakers doesn’t make the amp any better so you’re still pumping in the same crappy signal to your new speakers

I feel you on that, just hurts my heart to think about needing to buy a $250 to 300 Amp Pro before I even begin buying everything else. I'm cheap. I'm not afraid to admit it. I would be thrilled if I could just hook an additional amp sub up to what I already have but from what I'm reading I would at least need a LOC-22 or LC2I w accubass for $100. In my mind it seem like I would just need to use hilevel input and have amp volume knob so I can turn up when it starts to roll off, but everything I read says no DA JBL not simple. Must spend life savings to modify.
(Exaggerated for effect. No disrespect intended to anyone here except to JBL if there watching. I appreciate everyone here trying to help. It's hard to come by good people these days)

Thankfully Amazon will take just about anything back!!! Do you know the Kicker C8 was small barely could mount to stock plastic.
LOL!!! I was at point I'd try anything. Factory jbl 6x9s have potential with non paper cone and good sound I just don't understand how that magnet does anything. The 8" paper woofer in back is shitmade, i put big dent in center part feeling to see what it made of, but has decent sound at the low volume level they produce. If jbl would have given sub the same power as door 6x9s I think there would be very little discussion about doing changes. (COULD WE REWIRE AND MAKE THAT HAPPEN I WONDER???)nah then door speakers would be trash probably. I have no issue with dash tweeters/speakers they give all the highs I need and I think back door speakers contribute to that too.
If you do swap any out I'd make sure you get upgrades of same kind/spec as what's in there already and hope for best. Component front doors 2 ohm for example not coaxial bc sound like trash. Even though there better speakers it's not the signal amp is sending

Just seen this thing, is it an offbrand Loc-22 ish device? Just a quick glance looks like it does about the same things

What does it do then? It's powered and has all the same hookups looks like except no clipping control. Says it boosts output ?

What would happen if ran factory sub wires to hi level input on aftermarket amp? Would it produce amplified sound just bass volume would stop increasing with factory amp and if so would having amp volume knob near so you could continue to turn up not rectify? Or would jbl flip the middle finger and do absolutely nothing bc it don't care what level inputs are it just ain't gonna work
