Stereo parking brake connection

I bout an

$280 Alpine iLX-W650 Digital Multimedia Receiver with CarPlay and Android Auto Compatibility

Alpine iLX-W650 and am having trouble with the connection to the “parking brake”, which many say you can just ground the wire to bypass. I’ve grounded the wire and still when I turn the truck off and then back on, I’m locked out of settings. Where can I find the actual parking break wires to make this connection? Or do I have to buy the bypass?

 

I wired in a switch and hid it in the glovebox on an older crown Vic I had. Radio to switch, switch to a good grounded spot behind the dash. Done

 

Try just finding a good ground on the radio body.

 

You can't just ground the newer units anymore to bypass them. They need to either be hooked up correctly to the parking brake sensor, or bypassed with a relay. Many people use the PAC TR7 but there are plenty of other options as well.

Some do. Mine is only a year old and i grounded it to the radio chaise.

 

Pretty sure I ran mine to the e-brake switch. Why is that not working for you?

 

Doesn't it depend on the stereo? Some might want to sense 12 volts to mean parking brake engaged, some want that to mean not engaged. You really need to check the instructions for the stereo and then look at the wiring diagram for the parking brake for your model.

 

Here is teh location of the e-brake wire in my 2009 double cab. Probably similar in other models. I spliced this wire and connected it to my Alpine ilx-407 and it worked like a charm.

 

In most cases I am removing these fancy radios and going back to stock in my mid eighties vehicles.

I am curious why hook to the parking brake switch circuit.

Is this so the sound system can not be used unless the parking light switch is closed ?

As a means to say our radio was not the cause of the distracted driving ?

 

In my case, Setup menus, playing movies, and other things deemed distracting require the e-brake to be engaged to allow use. In addition, the newer head units have to see a change from no e-brake to e-brake so the signal is not just bypassed usually by grounding.

It still allows the system to play your just not not permitted to use involved functions while moving

 

Just to add the actual answer to an old thread:

I accidentally bought a "remote turn on kit" rather than a bypass kit, so needed to wire up the parking brake cable while I wait for the right bypass.

I combed through the FSM without any luck. Ended up just going to peak my head under the dash. There is a switch on the parking brake assembly, with a pair of wires- a white wire, and a green wire. I rolled the dice and spliced into the green wire. Turned everything on, and it worked. There is enough space right after the connector for the switch to get a splice connector in there.

So that's the answer: the green wire connected to the parking brake switch.
