3rd gen 5100 on 2nd gen

Is the only difference the notch setting?

 

Found a good local deal. I have 885 and only want a 2.5 in over stock. Every where is sold out on 2nd gen bilstein.

 

I think the travel is a little shorter, but it will definitely work. Are you using you stock 2nd gen could

 

I did a lot of digging into this regarding the 6112's and found a bunch of info on the 5100's. Rear 5100's are all the same (length and valving) for 2nd and 3rd gen. The 3rd gen 5100's have one extra clip setting since the 3rd gen is heavier up front. If I remember correctly each setting on the 5100 from a 3rd gen front shock on a 2nd gen is apx 1/4"-3/8" (on. a v6 model) higher than the same setting if used a 2nd gen 5100 on a 5100. So, be careful if you want to put it all the way on the highest setting. You will likely end up close to 3" of lift depending on your front accessories. That would require UCA's and would ride very rough since you would be closer to the end of your down stroke. I would probably go with the 3rd or 4th clip setting at the most. Internal valving from all my research seems to be the same on both 2nd and 3rd gen. NOTE: if you have 3rd gen coil springs, they will lift it further since they are a higher spring rate.
