This works in a pinch/emergency but I would highly advise against this as your standard procedure. I’ve seen people bend hitch pins doing this and then it’s a huge pain to cut it out of the receiver.

this is because hitch pins are designed to take a shear load applied by the hitch and receiver. By omitting the hitch you're applying a bending force that the pin was never designed to handle.

At that price, don't bother with anti-theft. Leave the hitch insert in the receiver with the included pin. I would keep the shackle in the tool bag with the recovery rope until you need it, since you'll have to unthread the shackle to feed the rope through it anyway.

It all comes down to how the word recovery is defined.

A slight pull to get out of a snow bank or soft sand.

The truck buried where you have mud almost to the steering wheel .

Depending on where you live, theft has nothing to do with price. And if you need to do a pull or get pulled, and the hitch insert is gone, that would be a hassle. Honestly, I don’t understand all the trucks I see here at TW, with Rotopax, Maxtraxx and all kinds of other goodies just hanging out there. I don’t leave anything except a few shopping bags visible INSIDE my locked truck, in front of my house.

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
Curt Manufacturing makes a receiver shackle mount rated for 9500lbs and it comes with a 6.5 ton shackle. No bling factor like some of the others, but it’s affordable and not some off brand chinamart garbage.
