Tacoma Keys

Next up: Installing the Techstream SW.

If you bough the SZ-Tonda V13.10.019 version and Mini-VCI cable from Amazon (above), then that installation is straightforward. The readme instructions are pretty clear and easy to follow.

I chose the 64 bit installation. I had no problems with my installed and running antivirus for the Techstream application.

I used "1" for the application installation fields (without the double quotes). You can enter anything in the installation fields. Don't change the User type (leave it as Dealer).

After those screens, you will copy / paste the installation unlock key value obtained from the seller (or other unlocker). That will take you to the Techstream main screen. You can now close / exit that for now.

It was when I got to the 64 bit Xhorse software driver install (copy step, actually), that my antivirus balked and said that it (the driver code) was a form of a generic virus.

I declared the driver installation sub directory to be AV "off limits", and then proceeded to copy the driver from the CD. I was frankly uneasy with the decision of installing code of unknown "cleanliness" into my machine's OS, but I then decided to make it temporary. After completing the tasks, and testing the newly minted keys, the driver now no longer exists, so I feel better about that. The driver installed correctly per instructions.

You plug in the Mini-VCI cable to an open USB port, and the laptop chugs along for awhile. Eventually, the laptop informs you that it can not find the driver for the new device. So, you go to the laptop's device manager, and select the new device in the list. Follow the instructions to install the driver manually. Note the instructions say to install the driver *twice*. It has to be done twice. The device is installed at this point, so now follow the directions to check it.

Open Techstream, and go to setup / VIM select. Then from the dropdown picklist, select the Xhorse VIM device.

If everything works, then go to the vehicle, attach the MVCI port to the OBDII port under the driver's side dash.

Insert a valid registered vehicle key and turn it to On. Then, Select "Connect to Vehicle" in Techstream.

You will have to manually enter the vehicle type, year, model and engine (2gr-fks).

You will select the "w/o (without) Smart Key" option, to program the key immobilizer and the fob buttons.

OK, almost there, you brave soul. Next up is programming the keys at the Tacoma.

Before we get here, you take your new unprogrammed key blanks to a locksmith and have them cut. Mine has a laser cutter and charged me $4.00 each side. Two keys, 4 sides = $16 bucks.

I notice these aftermarket keys slide in easily in only one orientation. I have to force them in if I turn them 180 degrees. Sighting down the key blank from the pointy end to the fob, I see a slight curvature to the long axis, a bend in them, like the letter "C". This is likely why they fit into the ignition smoothly in only one orientation.

Anyway, get them cut first. Then try'em. They will turn in the lock all the way to "Start", but they will not start the Tacoma (due to the Immobilizer system).

OK, here we go, program the key finally.

Insert the Mini-VCI cable into the laptop. Start up the Techstream application. Connect the MVCI cable to the OBDII port under the driver's side dash.

Insert a valid, registered key in the ignition, but do not turn it on (just insert registered key). All the interfaces and programming steps assume you're starting with a valid key in the ignition.

Select "Connect to Vehicle" button in Techstream.

Manually select your vehicle make model year and engine type (every time).

Select w/o (without) Smart Key. (Programming instructions change if Smart Key selected).

To program "H" key type Immobilizer, select Immobilizer menu item and Next (Arrow button at bottom), and then select the Utility Button, and then Key Registration Menu item, and Next.

The Immobilier interface (ECU) will fail to be recognized if a valid key in not in the ignition switch, with the vehicle off. (Key just inserted, not turned). Yes, you have to ignore the constant "beep" if you're working with the door open.

Be prepared to swap keys around (valid and new) while following the menu instructions. It will feel fast paced. There are 10 sec time limits, and they feel short. Follow the on-screen Techstream directions.

When done, select Close at the bottom left to get back to the Main Menu.

To program the Fob buttons, select Main Body menu item at the top menu page, and Next. Then select Utility button, and Wireless Code Registration menu item. The steps are easy, with long time limits. Follow the on screen instructions. When done, select Close.

I just wanted to say thanks for this thread. I had received my ebay keys and TS and had the (2) keys cut at my local hardware store....they did it for free no less. When I first saw your steps I had already gotten the laptop and TS all ready but just needed to run through the remote button codes. Thanks for the steps on that I had not yet pulled them and you made it easy!

Our 2019 Tacoma H key fcc ID HYQ12BDP while inside key unit is HYQ12BEL.
So bought HYQ12BEL key from ebay for 15$. Key I bought has 4 button. Includes trunk button that my truck does not need so applied epoxy around button so it no longer can push/work. Also put dark nail polish to hide trunk logo. IMO does not matter that you have extra button. It just does not do anything.

Local Ace hardware strode cut the keys for approx 2$. Local locksmith programmed for 40$ each.
All are working fined or year.

Btw one of the transponder chip out of 3 keys did not work either it was defective or seller sent wrong version.

As far as I can see HYQ12BEL & HYQ12BDP are interchangeable. However YMMV so use your own judgement.
