Oil filter housing is torqued to kingdom come. Holy shit I can't get this thing to budge. I bought a cheap adapter deal and it's toast.

That was what my thread with a poll seems to have found:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/diy-oil-change-poll-stock-nylon-cartridge-filter.688074/

I did an oil change at 5k and had no problems, and thankfully no issues after ToyotaCare was done. But, it seems that most issues are caused by the techs and is not an issue with the nylon cartridge itself.

Never had a problem once I went to an aluminum cartridge! A few times with that POS OEM that came on I couldn't get it off without the porter cable impact!!

It does suck. Once you get this one off, I would be willing to bet that you'll have no problems down the road.

I did an oil change on the Honda and the oil filter was on there TIGHT! The last person to change the oil was the Honda Techs. I put 2 hands on that filter twisted my whole body and nothing. Used and oil filter ring tool and nothing. Finally got a hammer and a long flathead screw driver and it worked. Theres no reason to put them on this tight. I've always hand tightened mine and put oil around the o-ring and never have a problem. Get a long flathead screw driver and bang it all the way in til it pops out the other side of the oil filter. Then use the hammer to bang the screw driver handle in the direction to loosen it.

While looking for an adapter i’ve found reviews saying the cheap ones tend to break quite easily, which should be no surprise.

I encounter the same thing when I first changed my oil after my toyota care ended. That motivx filter wrench with a 27mm socket really saved my ass, but it was still a pain to get off even with a 2ft breaker bar. I was afraid I was going to crack the housing.

Asshats at my dealer did the same to my filter and warped my rotors putting lugs on with impact wrench.

Best just to not go to dealer for anything. At my last free oil change I asked them not to tighten the housing so much. They said "we'll try, but I can't promise you"

From my experience that clip only seems to stop the cartridge from fully unthreading. By the time that mine actually engages the flutes, the cartridge is about half unthreaded.

You broke it due to user error. You don’t want to use the square hole for a 1/2” breaker bar. You really want to use the larger hex with a socket on the breaker bar. The 1/2” hole is for reinstalling using a torque wrench.

When a tech spent $500 on the snap on truck for that new impact gun, you better believe they are going to use it on every thing they can.

New tool from auto zone. Finally got it....

I had to plant my feet on the tire to give myself enough leverage to get the fucker un stuck. Holy shit. The tool that broke was obviously cheap but it didn't feel much cheaper than what I got from auto zone.

How many ugga duggas for the plastic cartridge? I'm thinking three ain't nearly enough.

Plus it was said that another tech verifies the work. So, at least a couple more ugga duggas for good measure.

Twice I had that problem ... One time I used a big ass strap wrench (I luckily had clearance ) - other time the filter was distorting. I got a big a$$ screwdriver and pounded it through the filter ... go figure ...
