Both sides should line up at the same time.
Check out the video I posted on page 1. Don't worry about lining up the primary chain, just the two smaller secondary chains.
I sent you a pm with my number if you want to get ahold of me directly

I'll watch it tonight  didn't realize there was one. I'm done for the night, it's cold, my wife is cold and bored watching gears turn. Thanks.

I'm 90% sure the crank pulley needs to rotate twice for the cam gear to rotate once. That means at 20 crank rotations- you might not quite be there to get your chains to line up @Sandman614

remember they don't have to be lined up to do this- it just helps.

Yep your 100% right. Watched the video and that's exactly what I was looking for. I'd bet tomorrow I need like 4 more crank rotations :annoyed:. It was just getting too cold to want to keep messing with it.

I was wondering if we could just put both dots lined up with the cylinder marks and then install the gears. Not fully understanding the reason for lining the links up too I was just gonna do it. Didn't seem like it'd be that much more work and seemed like a better safe than sorry deal.

*goofy mechanic video "you don't have to use a wrench, but it helps"

If you wanna talk about lazy mechanic-ing
When I was counting these rotations- I had my old man bumping the ignition while I counted. Much easier than turning it over by hand.
(Notes- oil will be spraying everywhere with this method so you need a deflator of sorts and I wouldn't recommend doing it with spark plugs in
I had him stop at 16 cam gear rotations and did the final 2 rotations by hand to ensure not going past my mark)

Was thinking about this job and planning out the tools in my head. While looking at torque wrench adapters I found this.
Motion Pro 08-0380 Adjustable Torque Wrench Adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000GZND2Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_K56FR75XH1ZH4AJVS5GQ?_encoding=UTF8

Not sure if it’s worth the extra to use in future cases, since I’m 38 and haven’t needed one of these yet otherwise, so the chance I’ll need one again is slim, lol.

This is completely pointless. If your motor isn’t in the right position after a max of 2 crank revolutions then it wasn’t timed right to begin with and no matter how many times you turn it over will remedy that. The orange links are irrelevant for the cam gear installation

Not completely irrelevant. They help those without a paint marker on hand for instance and it does give piece of mind to those diving into an engine for the 1st time that they reassembled correctly. You, myself and most gearheads don't need the marks but sometimes I'm helping guys over the phone with these who I wonder if they know how to change their oil.

:notsure: I turned it and the the dots lined up with the cylinder nubs and the crank pulley is on zero, just no links. And now the links line up. So I don't see how it's not timed right...

I was just trying to follow directions.

All buttoned back up and first impressions, you can definitely tell the ECU is relearning. Strange shifting and having to let off the throttle where I didn't have to before.

Drove it around the interstate today. Haven't noticed any extra power but it does feel less restricted. The more I drive the truck the more it feels like there's less "compression"(not the write wording).. Less holding it back when downshifting and letting off the gas, it doesn't want to slow down as much and coasts more.

I'm wondering how that's going to effect offroading in low gear. Might have to just use more brakes.
