Need help w/gift of new headlights

As a birthday gift, I'm replacing my boyfriend's headlight assembly on his lifted 2014 tacoma. My plan was to buy this one off Amazon and install it on his truck myself as a surprise. After watching a couple youtube videos, I have mixed feelings. Some make it look crazy easy and then others seem like a frustrating mess. Have any of you done this before on a 2014 tacoma? How did it work for you and do you think I should try to do it or not? Thanks

That’s extremely awesome of you to surprise him with parts for his truck, let alone installing it!

The most PITA parts are reaching the lower mounting bolt and maneuvering the headlights out and back in without scratching the lenses. Those headlights “appear” nice but I’ve seen mediocre reviews on the light output and overall quality

 

All aftermarket headlights have poor quality light output and most of them leak, allowing water to get inside. Although it’s cool that you want do something for his truck, aftermarket headlights are not an upgrade.

 

Wow it’s really a great gesture to be willing to also install his gift. But...

I’ve looked and have to agree with above. Unless you’re certain he wanted them, he might see it as a downgrade. If you look at the top of the list of posts, the stickies, there’s the ultimate headlight upgrade. It recommends oem Toyota pro something. If his are hazed over fading, those would make a difference, and they cost less than the ones you listed.

Some people, men, look at their vehicle as our most prized possession. That’s why we get in fist fights over door dings, and being cut off. Just something to think about.

You could look at the stickies and probably find a how to on the headlight removal and replacement.

These headlights are DOT approved and produce a distinct and consistent linear light projection.
They are better for legal light projection.

No they are not much brighter.
But they look better
The only way to achieve that is by putting LED light bulbs in your OEM housing, but that would be creeping into non-DOT approved lighting

You definitely don't want to put LED's in OEM housings. Forget about the legality for a moment, LED's is stock housings will be a "downgrade" with the reduced output (projection) and "scatter" that will blind oncoming traffic. The best bang for the buck is going with the upgraded harness and recommended high wattage halogens.

Using a LED in a housing that was designed for a halogen is a big mismatch. Halogens output are omidirectional and LED's bidirectional.

Edit: Forgot to mention that if you live in an area that has snowy and icy winters, LED's run cool and they won't be able to melt snow and ice buildup. This is from personal experience. Halogens don't have this problem.....

 

The only proper way other than the upgrade mod posted previously is a proper HID retrofit
