I spend a lot of time wheeling alone and I'm considering a land anchor for peace of mind. The closest places to me are all sand and no trees. I like the Pull Pal but it looks gigantic and it's expensive. I found this other anchor on Amazon and I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck with these. I know the Pull Pal is superior but I'm hoping this cheaper one is worth it and will work in a pinch. What are your thoughts?

Looks like a modified Dansforth anchor. I used one years ago but ran into two issues. One, in really had soil or rocks they are useless, they don't dig in. Two, heavy. This one looks fairly light and foldable. I wonder about durability.

On the plus side, if it does dig in and get really stuck (that is what you want, you can reverse the pull direction and they pop right out.

Looks very promising. Specially the price.

yeah. I've seen mixed reviews and some disappointing videos of people using these. So I'm not sold on them. The Pull Pal is just so big and expensive it's hard to pull the trigger on them. The second video is actually pretty funny. But I can't tell if they simply don't work or if it's user error. Looks like it would work okay in sand which is what I need it for.

Well, the thing is that in hard soil, the probability of getting stuck is low. The tests should be in soft dirt, sand, mud etc.
    IMHO

We have some odd terrain here in Utah where it's entirely possible for the ground to be hard as concrete with only a truck length or two long mire of bentonite clay in the center. Totally possible to become tremendously stuck, and yet have nothing to dig into for a deadman anchor as @ScenicCityOverland discovered on Cottonwood Canyon Road

For situations like that, maxtrax, a shovel, and a boatload of time.

Yeah. I've been there. It has taken hours to get out even with friends around. But lately I've been trying to go completely solo except for the wife and dog. That's got me looking at some sort of anchor.

Thanks for sharing this pic. I've seen and studied this method before. I have such a tendency to over prepare and over pack. I needed to see this pic to remind me that less is more sometimes. Those anchors take a lot of space and are heavy. I already carry everything needed to recreate this picture and get out of a jam in the very rare occasion I would need it.

    Upside - it's a hell of a workout.
    Downside - it's a hell of a workout.

Try the Deadman off road anchors. They are more suited to the desert and since they are fabric can be folded into less space. Also you can wrap them around a rock or boulder which we have a lot of in the desert. I also carry a pick as well as a shovel to get through the sandy/rocky ground that we have a lot of too.

    There's also the deadman anchor.

IMO, these seem a little more universal since you can use it as anything from a tree saver to burying it in the sand, or wrap it around rocks.

It's probably a lot lighter and more compact than carrying around a boat anchor.

I would consider rocks as the hardest type of "soil," and people get stuck in those all the time.

Folks seem to think the videos show the only way to use the anchor. But I have attached an anchor via a line to the rear of my Jeep while using the front winch mount for extraction of another vehicle. Sometimes the extraction vehicle will start to move before the stuck vehicle.
