You will see where they applied it and will have to clean it off to apply the new one. It’s obvious once you have it apart.

found out the hard way after breaking one,
that answer = spray with lubricant such as silicone, then gently wiggle a small flathead screwdriver on each side in the tab (pocket screwdriver) while wiggling up with constant pull

if anyone knows part number on replacement plz post

I found that a slotted door panel and plastic retainer tool works wonders on them.

So once the engine is at top dead center and I install the new cams, it will look like this? The “dimple” on the bottom of the cam gear?

Sweet. Then I’m golden. Installed it today. I have a 2015 so I have the air pump on the passenger side….took me 4 hours from start to finish and about 30 min of that was struggling to line up the intake manifold bracket. Couldn’t get the lower 12mm bolt started by the headers. Turns out you can go in thru the wheel well.

I will report later how it drives after putting on some miles

I’ve got a day off tomorrow, got all the missing tools I need, and gonna dig into this. I just reread a bunch of posts in the thread to hopefully have a smooth install.

Had mine done over the weekend by non other than the world famous @JustDSM. I kinda helped... I’m pretty sure he had it finished in record time but upon reinstalling gaskets we ran into a problem... I was sent the same side gaskets from Toyota but we lucked out and found a gasket set at an auto parts store close by. After we had acute heart attacks (inside joke ), and Justin working his magic on recalibrating my hell spawn Tacoma, I’ve come to this.

    Deeper exhaust note.
    TORQUE.
Truck doesn’t feel like it has a jake brake when letting off the throttle to coast to stop.
Fuel mileage has jumped up 2 mpg, so far. But I have been kinda standing on the throttle, so that could possibly be the low side of things.
I can’t speak for everyone else but I can speak for my truck and what has become of it after installing these gears and Justin’s fairy dust. My truck runs completely different and I am 100% happy with the gears installed. Thank you @mightytacoman for this product and thank you @JustDSM for ALL OF YOUR TIME and skills.

For you guys with SAI, what did you do with your intake hose? Seems like there’s a lot to unbolt to get to the bolts on the hose near the fender. Why is that one bolt under the sai pump? Ugh

Push in tab and pull apart. Sometimes I find it easier to push it in while squeezing the tab then pulling it out. Other times I wiggle a screw driver under it to help push it out while squeezing the tab

    Thanks!
The tab wasn’t budging at first. Made me think it wasn’t a tab. I’ve got the driver side cover free. Undoing the passenger side now.
pretty slow going. Mostly because the clips are such a pain and there are so many.

Install update. Not quite done after about 5-6 hours. I went slow, stopped for lunch. The biggest time suck was all the clips and the sai system. So many clips! A few were stubborn and at awkward angles. Thanks to this thread the 2 on the manifold by the firewall were ok. And all those weird clips on the studs weren’t too bad. A tool for pulling interior door panels helped a lot.
I struggled with the passenger side gear. The tensioner kept me from being able to set the gear. Tried for a bit, pulled it off, tried again. I had to squeeze the tensioner to get the slack I needed. Felt like there was a little gas strut in there.
I stopped after getting both valve covers back on. Should go pretty quick tomorrow bolting up and re-clipping everything.
Not looking forward to squeezing that sai back onto its studs. Any tips for that @greenEFSI ?

I've seen that passenger side tensioner do that before. With tension on it over a minute or so- it'll bleed out and fully compress.
As for the sai- I don't have much advice as I haven't personally installed on a 12+ yet.

Ha. A little late to do that on this round. I'd like to do the tune, but didn't combine it with the cam gears project.

The SAI was quite a wiggle to get off with the way the studs sit. I'm sure it won't be too bad with a fresh start tomorrow.

With the tensioner, I got stuck, moved to the driver side and kind of figured it out, then went back. That helped me sort it. It was only a couple minutes. Driver side went on super easy.

I'll add that breaking loose those cam bolts is no joke. I borrowed some square metal tubing from a friend that's a good 3.5 feet. I could barely squeeze it under the hood, haha. But it got the job done easily.
