This is off subject but does anybody know of a decent GPS that I can take hiking with me and allow me to plot waypoints so I could use it to get back to camp if I get lost?

    To eliminate boiling pot:

Pack a can of chili as part of your trail food. First night out, you heat the chili in the can and have chili. Enjoy excellent farts.

Wash out can. Thence forth, the can is now your boiling pot and/or a cup as needed. Handle carefully (I usually just use the pliers on my multi-tool). Disadvantage: You will be limited to single serve portion prep.

Alternative method: Sucker your trail partner into carrying the mess gear.

As for the frisbee plate, why the hell aren't you guys just eating out of the pot/chili can?

hmmm... not a bad idea... I might start making Manwiches... that can is a little bigger and should hold enough water for my meals.

    thanks!

A note: Remove can label before using as a boiling device, unless you need to make some money off taking bets when it will unexpectedly burst into flame. Ask me how I know.

This would definitely work. I forget what brand I used, but it was in Krogers in the spaghetti aisle.

 hahahahaha funny stuff right there!

I pull this off all the time! lol I can't wait till my dog gets a bit older/bigger then she'll have her own pack! And she'll be able to carry the mess kit :D

If I were to buy a GPS unit, it would be this one. Best GPS for the money IMO. Plus have you seen the in-cab mount MOD for this?? it looks sweet!

I hear ya. I would just buy the one you posted. seems like a good deal and you should be comfortable. got a air pad? that will definitely keep you warm.
I always end up unzipping my mummy and using it as a blanket. Im the kinda person that moves in their sleep, dont like being restrained in the mummy.

take a look through these. most mapping handhelds have this feature. garmins also have a feature called 'trackback' that allows you to retrace your steps. and iirc you can set an alarm that goes off if you stray too far from the course...never used it on mine but i believe it is a feature.

I have that model as well. More or less happy with it but it does seem to wander if I stop or go too slow...and I have to recalibrate the compass several times in a day (no idea why but it flips around 180 at random)

Then why are you recommending them to others??? LOL

it is a good unit...mine just has grelims. The place that sold it to me didn't believe me when I told them about hte compass thing so I brought it in one day and the sales guy and I walked around the parking lot. Calibrated the compass, walked a few hundred feet one way, sharp turn, another turn and viola! The GPS said we were going SSW and we were heading N. No idea.

I'll play along too...I do a fair share of camping and hiking. I hike just about every weekend in the summer and am out driving in the hills 3-4 nights a week on average so I keep a good amount of gear with me just in case I should ever have to spend an unexpected night in the great outdoors.

    Staples in my backpack are:
    1st aid kit
    Gerber multi tool
Light my Fire fire steel (awesome little gadget!)
snack size bag of fritos chips (for fire starters, not eating)
    snacks...granola bars, power bars, etc
    poncho
    space blanket
    headlamp
    compass and maps
    GPS
extra batteries (for the headlamp and GPS)
    bear spray
sunscreen, lip balm, allergy meds :)o hayfever sucks!)
and of course water, lots and lots of water

    year-round staples in my truck:
    trenching tool
    hatchet
    folding saw
    rope
    tarp
    another 1st aid kit
    lightsticks
    flashlight
    lighter, newspapers (for fires)
    more snacks
    more water
    TP
    recovery straps
    sleeping bag
    change of clothes

    Winter time I also keep:
    Folding snow shovel
    Snow pants
    Extra parka
    wool socks
    thermal undies
    2 sets of gloves
    hat

Holy crap that's a lot of stuff  and that's just what I keep in the truck at all times.

When I do plan on camping I also have a plastic tote that I load up...it fits nicely in the back seat with my tool box that contains all of the stuff listed above. The tote is for all of my food and cooking necessities.

I had to replace my tent this year...last one got moldy :( and I didn't think I could save it. I got a Kelty Grand Mesa 2 to replace the old Gunnison 2. I also splurged this year on an REI self inflating sleeping pad. I'm in love. Never dreamed that 1" of air could be so comfortable to sleep on! No more pine cones digging into my backside at 3 am :D.

I know there's more but that's all I can think of right now!
