I am so angry. A month ago I started my truck (2016) and got the “New Software Not Compatible With System” error. Apparently my Entune account was also was also all jacked up. It took them days to fix it. Took to the dealer yesterday and they say they could not apply the needed software and I need to spend $917 for a new head unit. I sm beyond pissed. I have a case opened with Toyota I am waiting to hear about. It’s only like a month out of the extended warranty. Any ideas? I am not buying a new stock head unit. It’s a piece of crap. And in my opinion, Toyota broke the radio with their software update. Am I Wrong?

I never update things unless the update fixes a problem I am having. But, this is a common issue (not with entune) with most electronics, updates when they fail halfway, they can brick the device.

If I were you, I would remove the entune app from your phone, unplug the radio and hold down the volume knob. Then plug it back in, and go into the system menu. To get to the system menu, hold the audio button and flip the headlights on and off 3 times I think. There should be some diagnostic programs in there you can run. If there is something to completely reset the headunit, do that too.

If resetting doesn’t work out you can get a OEM head unit for $350 all day long on Craigslist.

I don't know if you can get to this point, but @ktbell444 has posted the latest H/U firmware:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-multimedia-updates.696603/

In that thread, I have some posts about the procedure.

    Good luck!

These are the notes that copied from some other post:

To get in you turn on the ignition, turn your headlight switch fully off then on one click, then after your HU screen has settled down, press the Home button, and then press-and-hold-in the Audio button and while pressing on the Audio button on the screen turn your headlight switch forward two clicks and back one click, three times, so you are cycling between the 2nd and 3rd options on your headlight switcher on the steering column.

Unfortunately it was automatic. It still actually works somewhat. It’s missing the clock and the buttons don’t seem to respond well. I will be trying some of the suggestions here and will report back. Thanks for all of the great answers!

Dealership probably bricked the unit by mistake. These units have been around for a decade so they're riddled with issue
