    Updated 11/03/2021

Well, I paid for a subscription to TIS (again).

Below you will find a link to the most up-to-date multimedia firmware for our 3rd Gen Tacoma's. They cover updates from 2016 through 2021 model years. No, these do NOT come as OTA updates! The TSB's are also attached separately in this post so you can review prior to downloading and updating, if necessary.

I have zipped all of the files into one. The updates for the 2020+ MY's are HUGE, so I cannot upload to TW. I will provide a link to my drive below.
If you do not know which one applies to your head unit then you can throw every file onto the thumb drive at once, as only the one needed will be pulled for the update. -Thanks to @tonered for this tip!

    Requirements to install the update:
    • A trusted USB flash drive (If it's questionable, get another)
    • Max 16GB for 2016-2019 (64GB said to work), 32GB for 2020+.
      • Minimum 4 GB if you're planning on throwing ALL of the files on your drive.
    • USB 2.0
    • Formatted as FAT 16 or FAT 32 (who uses FAT 16 anymore anyway)
    • No folders or other files on the flash drive

    Instructions:
    1. Download the update files from here (3.81 GB in size, so be prepared).
    2. Extract then copy the .kwi file(s) onto the prepared flash drive
    3. Follow the steps outlined in the TSB (both [2016-2019 and 2020-2021] can be found in the zip file).
    4. Crack open a cold one with the boys (Not necessarily in this order, but this step is required).

I just looked at the files. 13TDANNA-DA11_0160.kwi was problematic for some folks. You have Version 164 in there. I'm excited.

    Check it out @Saeros !

Also, the TSB was revised to note Version 164.

Well crap! Software update appeared to go well and I was prompted to turn vehicle off and then back on to complete the update. Then this. The screen before said to contact dealer. Any ideas?

That stinks. I was getting similar with the old version, except it was dying about 1/4 of the way through.

My only suggestion is waiting to see what other 2019 folks post up?

    I couldn't find a 2.0 USB stick. That shouldn't matter right? Formatted FAT32

Nah. As long as your formatted like that and are of decent size it should be fine. Getting that far, the USB stick shouldn't matter.

There are instructions if a FW update doesn't take, but it ain't pretty.

One was to try the update again with the Map SD card out.

The other was to wipe the H/U and disconnect the battery.

Neither worked for me. It was surprising how long it to get all the options set up again.

According to this link here (about ⅔ down), it says:
"There may be times that the software update cannot be performed due to communication device or media is still preparing, such as trying to perform the software update right after the navigation system has started up, so perform the operation after a while"

Maybe let the truck sit at idle for a bit before initiating the update?

Funny you mention that. I recently got a new map sd card off ebay and was wondering if that might be an issue. Put the OEM one back in and no joy.
And I have the battery unhooked now and on a charger.
The radio still works so its not bricked or anything... weird :annoyed:

Try it with the card out.

Yeah. The updates are generally foolproof, so you won't have any issues if the update doesn't take. Here even more so as earlier versions were publicly available on the Downloads website.

I think you're fine. It wouldn't be official from Toyota if it wasn't a pain in the ass.

Here's another link I found online that may be useful.

I’m gonna go drive it in a bit. That document also says if an audio update is available but won’t install, replace HU! o_O:cool:

Unlikely, but another USB drive couldn't hurt.

Yeah. That one is interesting, but obviously the H/U is good. It is just the FW that is wonky. We'll see what the new version does for me.
