Hey guys. So Im wiring my 3rd brake light and getting my positive from the green/red stripe wire. Im taping into the three brake light wires for the red stop light in the middle.
There are three wires, black w white stripe, green w red, green.

When I put the volt meter onto the - black/white wire and the + Green/red wire it blows my stop light 10A fuse. Iv read a bunch of instals and mine is the same.

Did anyone else experience anything like this? It doesnt blow a fuse if I dont connect those wires to the volt meter so I could just leave it and have no 3d brake light. Its fuse 7 in the engine bay, which I could tap into with an add a fuse and run a line all the way back but I suspect it will still blow.

You shouldn't be blowing a fuse with a volt meter. Something else must be going on? Is the meter set to read DC?

Yea volt meter is set to 20v dc. And its a good one. Green with red strip is the hot wire for the stop light?
Im going right to the bulb wires. Yup its a leer cap with 3rd brake light.
Whats weird is when I put the - lead and then touch the + to the green/red wire it sparks. This might be a situation were I should just leave it. Electrical problems are the worse. No trailer hitch wires, nothing loose.
Maybe I need the green wire instead.

I'm not sure of the wire colors for your year model.

I've been using electrical test instruments for a very long time and I never seen a meter blow a fuse unless your using it wrong. Or the meter has a problem. Or the electrical system has a problem.

You probably should either buy a No-Splice harness. Or take it somewhere and let someone else try. But I wouldn't be surprised if you don't still have problems.

You must be out to lunch on what your meter is set to. Sure you don't have it set to amps? With a multi-meter set to volts, the meter will have a very high impedance and should not cause any fuse to blow. Maybe your meter has an issue?

I am also not finding a Green/Red stripe wire anywhere for the tail light circuit.

    upload_2021-5-9_3-38-47.jpg
The functions of the R5/R6 connectors at the tail light are as follows
    1 - Turn signal +12V pulse (Yellow[Driver], Blue/White stripe[Passenger])
    2 - Tail light +12V (Green)
    3 - Ground (White/Black stripe)
    4 - Brake light +12V (Blue)
    5 - Reverse +12V (Red)
6 - Spare as far as I know

Thanks guys. I often skip lunch actually. I have a lot of experience with electricity and I wouldnt have brought it up unless I was flabbergasted. Theres no continuity when connecting the volt meter to the - and +, so maybe voltmeter (which also has a fuse). So off to use a new meter.

I didnt want to connect from the toyota harness rather I used the tail light assembly as it has its own wiring. Theres two wires, green and green/red when you step on the brake one of those should read around 12v. I dont like those wire splices so I soldered into tailight wires. Perhaps I should take my positive lead from the voltmeter and touch the blue (40) wire and step on the brakes.
