I finally gave up after 3 years, dumped the 2018 DCLB, and bought a 2021 Voodoo Blue DCSB TRD Off Road Manual

Howling rear diff totally unacceptable, I won't buy another new tacoma til I know the defect has been fixed.

So 312 pages in this thread total, has there been positive confirmation that the howling diff has caused failure? I wouldn't call it a defect. More of an annoyance. Some more annoying that others.

    This.

I’ve driven 55k miles with it and I’ve never been worried about failure.

    Re-sell on the other hand...

honestly I wouldn’t care if I knew for sure that it doesn’t cause any damage. I’ll just drown out the noise with mud terrains :D

This isn't the first vehicle I've had that did it. My Jeep did it from 51k when I bought it to 183k when I sold it. As long as fluid levels are good just send it.

I think I'm experiencing this but it's more of a whine. At first I though it was something to do with the tires (like when driving on a cement freeway), or a bad bearing; but after some testing it seems like something with the engine/trans.

This might sound a little odd but, I first noticed the howl the first night I bought my truck new on the way home from the dealer on the highway. I replaced the stock tires with a set of Cooper At3's at 700 miles. Howling noise still there.

A little over a year later after the truck crossed 20,000 miles, the thought occured to me one day that I didnt remember hearing the noise recently. So I made it a point to listen for it the next time I drove the truck. I did that and sure enough the howling had ceased completely. Things stayed that way until the truck reached 31000 miles where the Coopers were about worn out. So I replaced them with a size bigger Falken wild peaks. After having the new tires installed the howling waa back again. Shortly after I installed a set of 1" lift blocks in the rear. Didnt affect the howling at all. And now Im currently at 40,000 miles and noise is still there.

Just noticed this noise this past weekend. I’m at about 7k miles on my truck, a 20 DCSB OR 4x4. Good to know it’s more of an annoyance, than anything else.

Same for the off-road model, from what the toyota service tech claimed here from my last toyotacare visit when i inquired about that problem. He said he hasn't seen the issue yet in the lower end sr, sr5 or some others. Also claimed most of the oddball issues are in the the trd's sports, and pro's. I've got just over 10k miles on my sr5...still very quite like any normal car or truck.

Just picked up a 2021 DCOR short bed and it whines at about 58 mph, annoying as hell. My 2016 ACOR never did it, but it did have an icon lift on it.

I would take it to the dealer and ask the tech to go for a ride with u so u can show them what its doing.
Replacing the rear cab mount dampers seems to at least lessen it to a degree from what I hear on the forum.

How is this still a question guys? Replace the rear leaf springs or forever deal with a (rear end) howl. It’s that simple.

Don’t replace with stock/OEM leafs or the same harmonic resonance will transfer from the diff through the springs to the frame and into the cab.

Icon RXT, Deaver, OME or any aftermarket leaf spring should mitigate your howl from the rear of the truck. There was/is a TSB covering this for earlier 3rd gen’s. Replaced the leafs and some body mounts. It helped a little.

The holes in the front lower control arms can also sound like a harmonica with the right crosswinds. Was a TSB for that too. Just plug 2/3 or so of the holes in them and that’s solved too

There is currently a post on one of the tacoma fb groups on this subject. Apparently a dealer is telling them the truck has a "bad differiental bearing" thats causing it.

A buddies 2019 trd or has had a faint howl since new at around 55 mph or a bit more when maintaining the same throttle amount. Hasn't gotta any louder, but hasn't gone away either. Doesn't seem worried about it.

I took mine to a different dealer for the second time. First dealer told me they all make that noise so a few thousand miles later it started to get worse. So the next dealer wouldn't even let me drive it home it was so bad.Said it could lock up any time so they gave a loaner and it took 4 weeks to get the part but i dont hear a thing now .It was getting so load i had to turn up the radio just to drown it out. Thanks Team Toyota of Schererville Indiana .
