Ha, I used to do that too. Get some swishers or black and milds.

The price of lumber is rediculous.

Since both of my vintage Martin's ('47 00-18 and '49 00-17) are in the shop with seventy year old bridges split through the saddle slot, I thought look for a Gibson J-45 in the same age range but really couldn't find one that made any sense, so I broke down at the height of the pandemic and bought a sight unseen Gibson Southern Jumbo from Sweetwater. Sitka spruce with mahogany back and sides and nitrocellulose lacquer finish. It was good right out of the box but after six months, it's turned into a fabulous guitar and I couldn't be happier. I did just order the new Waverly 21:1 open back tuners to replace the rather lackluster Grovers that came on it but that replacement turns out to be a bit more complicated as the screw holes are about half a hole off, so that means making a dozen mahogany toothpicks to glue in, cut off and re-drill, so about a day to do a job that should've taken 20 minutes. A really beautiful instrument that looks as good as it sounds, so I made sure to document it before it gets beat up too much. And of course, a shot of the back of one of those new Waverly's. GibsonSouthernJumbo2020_1500S.jpgWaverly21-to-1_1500.jpg

Took most of the year to find Brazilian rosewood bridge pieces for the Martins. $250 per. Hopefully they'll be back in my hands soon.

Interesting take. I have a Martin D18GE with Waverlys on them and an HD28 with Grovers on them and have no gripes with the Grovers.

The Grover Sta-Tites are very similar in design but have a ton of backlash when changing direction and just lack the overall precision, but they're only $50 roughly vs. close to $200. I've used Gotoh Mini 510's on a Goodall and a Tele copy, and those are amazing too.

Super precise. No backlash at all. Never slip and smooth as smooth can be but they're more expensive than a lot are willing to pay. At least the sets for guitar are in the $175-200 range while over $500 if you play mandolin. The big thing against Waverly's for the longest time was that they were 16:1 ratio which many felt was too coarse, so now with the 21:1 we should all be happy. I've already ordered another set for the 000 when it comes back from repair. Here's a link to StewMac https://www.stewmac.com/parts-and-h...with-butterbean-knobs-for-solid-pegheads.html

Here's one more thing for you list: Blue Chip Picks. The single best flat pick I've ever used. I like the TAD 1R series in 40, 50 or 60 (thousandths) thickness and have them all the up to a full 2.5mm, which turns out to be too thick for my tastes, but each thickness brings out something different but wonderful. Of course they ain't cheap at $35-75 and you really want to keep track of them at those prices, but you'll never be the same after. Kinda like the day I spent photographing Townes Van Zandt.

ahh, hmm. Pulling off to open problems or pulling off to another note problems? Or pulling off with picking timing?

I'm trying to think how I do mine. I pull off quick to not ring out any harmonics, unless I want that. A lot of variables to this...

It’s hard to describe but I usually try to use the meat of the finger that I’m “pulling off” to pull the string and almost slightly “pick it” on the way off of the string. It doesn’t have to be dramatic, it can be very subtle but it makes a big different IMO.

Because if you just pull the finger off, you won’t get the second note as clear / sustained as you would if you can get this down.

Or was your question more so, you’re hitting other strings when trying to do a pull off and don’t know how to clean it up?
