I initially tied Germes power to my Pioneer's remote output. It's capable of 300 mA I believe and while I haven't measured the Germes power draw, it just has to be significantly under that. However, I have a PAC TR4 so my remote output capability is actually 1amp but with a 3s delay. That 3s delay bothered me starting the truck as I back out of my driveway into a busy street on a T and it sort of sucks to wait 3s for my camera to come to life. So, I rather recently re-routed Germes power off my aux in cab fuse box so I can skip that delay. Not like I ever have the radio off anyway and it's nice to have it on a dedicated circuit with dedicated fuse.

And I've now officially ruined OP's awesome thread with talk of Germes and aux fuses. Maybe hit me up via DM for continued discussion if you so desire? I want to be respectful of OP, he's doing really fantastic work here.

Tom, I bought a bare, and I mean completely BARE model Tacoma (2020 SR Utility Access Cab). Models don't go any lower, and I still have an SOS module. I'd be real surprised if there was a 2020+ model without that SOS button. Also... care if I send my unused unit back (I'll cover shipping) for some store credit for against a 2020 model?

Thanks for the info, @MahTV! The wiring diagram seems to suggest that not every 2020 (and later model) will have it but Toyota.com doesn't seem to list it as an option in any of their build packages. I may have to call over to my local Toyota dealer to see if they can confirm if it's standard equipment.

As for your unit, yes, go ahead and send it back and I'll just refund you. Can you send me a PM with your order number? I'll setup a return shipping label for you as I wouldn't feel right charging you for return shipping, especially since I failed to do the due diligence to confirm whether or not it worked with the 2020+ models.

@caribe makaira Do you have any doc on SOS and vehicle wiring harnesses as far as the question of "does Toyota sell a 2020+ truck which does not have SOS?"

It is standard for continental US spec models. Look for Canadian, Mexican, Puerto Rican, etc., models to find one without SOS.

The wiring diagrams are not US-specific.

EDIT: Canada, Guam, Saipan, Samoa, Hawaii, Mexico, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, New Caledonia. These are the places to look. Canada/Hawaii are probably easiest for you to find.

FYI, the add-a-fuse didn’t work with my Excelon DNR996XR. The Kenwood fuse is right next to one of the Maestro connections, which gets in the way, and the Kenwood harness has a hard plastic extrusion (which you could trim if you wanted) that covers the fuse. I’m going to buy an in-line fuse and splice it into the red accessory wire (again, at my own risk, as I recognize that OP recommends against this).

Does any one know if it works on a 19 ? It seems like it would since the wiring changed in the 20

Just took a quick look at the wiring diagram, would it maybe be easier to just make the adapter connect at junction IN1 instead? It's certainly not as easy to get to for trucks without SOS, but it would be compatible with all 2016-2021's with all radio types.

Also, FWIW, the 2020-2021's without the separate amplifier and without SOS can still use the same adapter as 2016-2019.

Could continue to offer the current easy plug 'n play option for 2016-2019 with separate amp/2016-2019 without separate amp, and the A-pillar option for all 2016-2021, or just the A-pillar option for all.

Otherwise you end up needing to make at least 3 different adapters:

2016-2019 all, 2020-2021 without separate amp and without SOS
2020-2021 with separate amp without SOS
    2020-2021 with SOS

Update: Installed this with the 15 amp in-line fuse on a Kenwood Excelon (OP recommends against this, so I did this at my own risk). Spliced into the red accessory wire from the Kenwood harness. Also spliced in my Germes Lab camera controller interface. I went in the following sequence of connections: OEM wiring > Germes Lab > Tombit > Maestro > Kenwood. After some troubleshooting (Kenwood has a camera override feature that I didn’t know about, which keeps the camera from showing), everything works. Thanks @daveeasa for providing loads of help and for talking through the project and trouble shooting with me.

Edit: On install, the 15 amp add-a-fuse might have worked if I had trimmed the plastic of Kenwood harness, which covers the head unit fuse. The Maestro connection directly next to the Kenwood harness input is not needed with the Tacomas bc that is for steering wheel controls, and the Maestro’s data cable connection takes care of the steering wheel controls, so that input (a 3.5mm) is not used.

@WickedAx I saw this other thread https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/oem-microphone-wiring.514166/ about a potential solution for a 2nd Gen/2013 that you directed to this thread. I have a 2013 Double Cab and a Joying HU that should be delivered sometime next month.

I understand that you have your hands full with life as well as getting another batch of adapters out and testing for a 2020+ version, but I would like to buy one of these from you so I can attempt to modify it for use with the 2nd gen harnesses.

I figure that since condenser mic technology hasn't changed, the same +5v, MIC+, MIC- and DET leads are likely being used between the 2nd and 3rd gen OEM mics and that the major differences are in the harness plugs and their pinouts.

My intention is to put the right plugs on and test it out and give you the details so maybe you can add a 2nd gen option for those who are interested.
I would not be asking for any credit or a discount or anything like that, the joy of tinkering and a potentially working OEM mic in my truck are the only rewards I need.

    Are you interested?

    EDIT:
I decided to do a little detective work. Based on comparisons between post #19 on the thread I linked above and post #3 on the following thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2016-stereo-wiring-diagram.429679/ along with my own investigation of my 2013 wiring harness, I think it could very well be compatible already.

    The 2nd gen harness R15 uses pin 4, 5, 6 and 19 for 5V, MIC+, DET(SNS2) and MIC- in that order.

The 3rd gen harness R31 uses pin 4, 5, 6 and (unknown since the page is cut off, but I suspect it's 19) for 5V, MIC+, DET(SNS2) and presumably MIC- will be the unknown pin.

Below is my harness, it appears to be the same 28-pin used in 3rd gens and this adaptor.

@Hideki, I'm hoping to take a peek at the TechStream diagrams sometime today, but I agree with your assessment that it might be already be compatible. With that said, I've got a shipment of wiring harnesses on their way to me right now and am waiting on the PCB production to complete. Once I get those components I'll be able to get some more adapters assembled and ready for sale. If you haven't already done so, I'd suggest going over to my site and adding yourself to the waitlist to be notified when they're available for purchase again.

    Thanks!

Awesome, thank you sir, I got myself on the list!
I am excited to hear what you find in the diagrams since that compatibility would mean that at least some of us 2nd Gen owners could benefit from your hard work as well. I say some of us because somewhere in my digging, I can't remember where, I think I read that the 2012 model year was the first to use this setup, so '05 to '11 2nd Gens may not be compatible. I could be wrong about that part though.

Also waiting to get a hold of one. Depending on the head unit, just go ahead and install it. If it's one of the Android units, there's some tinkering involved. I think I've removed mine 4-5 times already in 2 days just try hook things up and try to make other things work.

Just wanted to get folks an update on adapter availability...

I've received a batch of wiring harnesses and the first of two runs of PCBs. I'm currently waiting on a few more components from one of my electronics components' supplier that'll be arriving early next week. Once I have those, I have all the parts I need to begin assembling this next batch of adapters.

Some other news is that I'll be offering a version of the adapter that comes with a low-profile mini fuse tap with a 5' lead. I've come to the realization that there are far too many fuse type variations used in aftermarket head units and that many of the head units are not conducive to supporting an add-a-fuse tap. While I don't recommend this, many end-users have ended up having to cut the add-a-fuse tap off and then use a butt connector to a longer length of wire so they can tap power from somewhere else in the vehicle. This new adapter I'll be offering will provide end-users with plenty of wire and a low-profile mini fuse tap so they can tap power directly from the fuse box (which uses low-profile mini fuses) just under and to the left of the steering column (near the driver's side kick panel.) I'm hoping to put up a product listing for this new adapter within the next couple of days and will enable the waitlist function on it so folks can be notified when it becomes available for purchase.

For those who are waiting on a version of the adapter that's compatible with the US 2020+ model years of the truck, that is in the works. I'm in the final stages of hashing out the design specification for the wiring harness as well as putting the finishing touches on the PCB design. At this point, with lead times what they are, I'm still at least a month away from having test units available. I've got a few folks who I've communicated with privately lined up to test these for me so I'll be reaching out directly once they're ready. Once I have a viable test unit I'll be able to do some product photography and then will add a product listing for which I'll also enable the waitlist functionality so folks can be notified when it becomes available for purchase.

I know many of you are anxiously waiting for these adapters and some are even holding up their head unit installations until they're ready. I want to thank you for your interest and patience as this is not my full-time gig and frankly, I was caught off guard by the demand. Currently, the long pole in the tent when it comes to lead times with these adapters are the global supply chain issues, which mostly affect the electronic components used to manufacture the PCBs. I'm hopeful that with the world starting to move past Covid-19 lockdown that logistics, freight forwarder and transoceanic freight companies are able to get the supply chain flowing again.

    -Tom
