So I have a 2006 Tacoma and would like to install a tailgate handle backup camera when I replace the head unit. Obviously my truck isnt wired for a backup camera and wondering if anyone has done this and knew where I could get the right harness/plugs? Below is the handle and camera I bought and plan on buying the Joying 8" head unit if that makes any difference.

Welcome to TW. The camera you have posted off Amazon is plug n play only for Tacomas that came with the rear tailgate camera. The factory cam requires 6V. You need an aftermarket cam that uses 12V since you will be using it with an aftermarket radio screen. On my 2005, I have the locking pop-n-lock tailgate handle that you have listed in your post. I bought a MasterTailgater handle that came with a camera. I simply removed the camera and installed it in the PopnLock tailgate with no issues. I ran the wiring along the frame up under the driver's seat grommet then up kick panel, under dash, then to radio. The reverse trigger power wire for the camera can be spliced into the rear tail light reverse red/blue wire. I also bought a cheap 12V cam for the front of the truck. Both cameras are lifesavers for parking.

Here's the Mastertailgater handle I bought and removed the cam to use in my PopnLock:

Thank you so much. The master tailgater comes with the wiring you need?

Yes. Red power to 12V source at taillight or driver's kick panel as posted by caribe makaira. Ground to bolt on frame. RCA cable to stereo camera output.

All of this is super helpful, but the master tailgaters camera does not come with a red wire to attach to the trigger wire from a head unit (i understand that the camera can get power from the reverse light, but the head unit needs to automatically display the reverse camera when reverse gear is selected, and from what i can tell of the provided wiring, it does not have that capability without running a separate wire from the trigger in the head unit to the red connection from the camera to the reverse light) - i am not sure what gauge wire would be needed to run this from the head unit down to camera for this purpose (i assume that is what the male fuse attached to the master tailgaters camera red wire is for, which i would need to plug into, but the instructions are unclear).

Anybody have any insight? Sorry for the newbie question.

Aloha. I am also looking at installing a tailgate handle camera with pop lock and run it to a rearview mirror screen to turn on when in reverse. What do you all recommend.

Additionally, the wife wants me to run front and rear dash cams for the road. Any suggestions here.

I have one of these from Master Tailgater. The image of their wiring harness that is posted online is inaccurate for some reason and I had to contact the company to figure out the wiring. Doing their standard install there is a black wire for grounding, a red wire for power (which ties into the reverse light), AND a green wire for the trigger. The green wire also ties in with the red wire at the reverse light, but the other end is attached along with the yellow RCA connector and is meant to be directly wired into the reverse trigger wiring inside the cab. I don't know why they don't provide a better wiring diagram with instructions, but I had reached out to them with questions and they provided it at that time.

Me, too! Did you find a solution? Will a camera fit in the handle of a 2007 Tacoma? Or, can you buy such a thing? (w/o the lock feature)

Bringing this thread back since I finally got my backup camera to work. I have a '05 so went with the Master Tailgater kit. I tried to get the camera to work but no dice; the only way I got it to work was to run the red power lead all the way to the footwell. Tried the reverse light on both sides and could never get the camera to work.
