On the older trucks you also have a pilot bearing . The pilot bearing supports the clutch disc when the clutch is pulled away from the flywheel .

I cant say I have ever heard the input bearing at the front of the input shaft make a chirping noise . I have heard a lot of input bearings make growling noises when the races get pitted but seldom in 4th gear when the transmission is locked 1 to 1
when using 1st gear through 3rd gear , the countershaft bearings are under load .
When you shift into 4th direct drive , the load is removed from the countershaft

Well one month later, this bearing has suddenly become *MUCH* louder (like screech-y). It also becomes louder when I press *in* the clutch. So I'm going to have to address this very soon.

You could always pull the transmission yourself and then have a shop swap the bearing to save some labor cost. Much of the labor is removing and reinstalling the transmission. Just another option

That is weird. Mine has always chirped and then will be silent for months before I hear it again. If it's getting worse, then yeah I wouldn't let that go unchecked. Just replace the whole clutch while you're at it

... and on the drive over to the shop to get this fixed, the Blanco Taco broke down in the middle of a busy intersection. Clutch pedal dropped to the floor and stayed there. Oh well. At least I was 3 miles from the place that would fix it, not 300 miles in the backcountry as I often am!

Mine started chirping about 6 months ago. Right at 80K. Runs perfect but chirps when in 1, 2, 3 and 5. In neutral it goes away when the clutch is pressed. Its a mild annoyance but not worth for me to spend 2.5K swapping it out. I read a post of someone swapping their tranny with new Marlin Crawler to address the noise, only to have the back within 5K miles.

You may also have a bad input shaft bearing in the transmission, but your breakdown sure sounds like a clutch problem. Let us know what the shop guys tells you and post a pic of the parts that actually failed. That should be interesting to all here. You were definitely correct in feeling that something was on the verge of failure. Good call!

Can you eliminate the noise by applying gentle pressure on the end of the fork that sticks out of the transmission? You can see me touching the fork in the image below; as soon as I lift my finger the chirp/screech resumes.

My truck makes a noise similar to what you're describing. Putting pressure on the clutch pedal eliminates the noise, and so does touching the fork with my finger. I'm about due for a new clutch, I'll post here whether I still have the noise after that job is done.

Following up.... the shop is doing a full bearing replacement with the transmission, plus installing a new input shaft which somehow became damaged. Additionally, we're replacing the clutch plate, which blew out literally on my drive over to the shop, leaving me stuck with a huge queue of cars behind me in traffic, so much fun!

Dang. Glad you're OK and not stranded in the boonies somewhere. Let us know how it runs when all that work is done.

I noticed my clutch pedal height and free play were out of spec and adjusted them. The pedal height was too low (~150 mm) and there was no free play. After adjusting the chirp is reduced, and driving around now the clutch just feels better.

My truck runs great after the repair. Very smooth and the clutch pedal is way easier to push in. All the noise is gone and it's remarkable how quiet and smooth my rig is considering the 340K mileage. Took it overnight in the backcountry of the Tahoe National Forest and everything worked well.

Give how crazy expensive these trucks are these days, I feel much better about repairing and improving my older Taco.

Keep us updated on whether the chirp comes back or not. Hopefully it doesn't, with mine it started up again maybe 10k miles after getting a new clutch/bearing installed. Crazy to hear that yours failed though, I think that's the first time hearing that happen on a first gen, for me anyway

So my chirp may have already started :) What I hear is a not-so-loud high pitched sound that could be described as a "chirp". It goes away when I touch the clutch, which seems consistent with what others have described. Slightly annoying, but I can live with it. The truck does have 344K miles on it!

    OP,
Glad your Taco is working well again. Did the shop replace the pilot bearing in the crankshaft? When I do overhaul my R150F transmission, I will change the pilot bearing and the rear main seal in addition to changing the clutch disc/plate/bolts/throw out bearing and resurface the flywheel while the transmission is out. This is simply common sense routine preventative MTX while the transmission is out.

I have an 02 with 255K on it. I started getting the chirp about a year ago shifting from 1st to 2nd. It sounds like a 2nd gear scratch I could get years ago with a fast muscle car. I read that was probably the pilot bearing. Anyway I just lived with it as it was infrequent and now I'm getting a new noise. Whenever I press the clutch in I can hear a whining noise, sounds like a low power steering pump. The sound lessens the more I press the clutch towards the floor. It's loudest when barely touching the clutch. It's not overly loud yet. If you have the radio on I doubt you would even notice. Is this probably the TOB? That's the only symptom as the truck shifts fine. Is this something I should be addressing in the very near future?

I went around town to see what it would cost for a new clutch kit installed and it was about $1000. I didn't think that was bad. Then for grins I went to the dealer and they quoted me $875 on the labor and would allow me to buy the kit from their website which saves about $150 in parts for a total of $1200. That's not much of a premium to have the dealer do the work as I don't know about the skills of the local shops.

I grenaded a trans after all the fluid puked out and replaced it with a marlin rebuild and it started whining a year after install. It's the nature of the beast with these. If I ever needed to I would just swap it myself, looks pretty easy once the trans is out, and that's only a few hour job.
