When you’re looking down the barrel at a potential $1,500-$2,000 repair bill, it tends to happen…

So far, there are only suspicions.

Nothing has been tested nor proved.

Quit worrying. Wait for the test results. Then you will have a better path.

The dipstick is proof of nothing, except your oil is a bit low and ready for a change.

Not yet. I dread the day that I do though. You're going easy on CA with that 4 letter word.

Agreed. about 20 minutes of your time cleaning a fluid overflow rez and refilling with a little bit of a 15-20$ gallon jug of coolant and you will be fine.

Charlie.....dump the 0/20 and start using some Mobil1 High Mileage 5w-30. You'll use less oil. It scores an 11.9 at 100° C....meaning it's a heavy 30. Perfect for your engine that's showing some signs of age.

The 2.7 was spec'd for 5/30 for many years. Quit listening to men over 60 in your life giving you outdated information about oil. Your father and mechanic are stuck in the past.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
Change the oil, buy some engine flush solution Follow instructions.. Perform another oil change. Toyota 4 cylinders running 0w-20 or 5w-20 have an issue with seizing up piston rings that cause excessive oil consumption. The other possibility is valve stem seals leaking oil. But you’d notice cold start blue smoke typically.

I would see if a flush and using some quality 5w-30 makes an difference. I managed to get my buddies quart every 500 mile corolla to pretty much quit burning oil using trans fluid and aggressive driving for a bit! Lol

His dad and mechanic have been telling him for sometime that it's dangerous to use anything other than what the manual states. Oil ignorance....it's rampant, even among mechanics.

Running a heavier oil in the 2.7 will harm nothing. The whole..."oh my god, it will mess up the VVT-i or the clearances are too tight for a heavier oil" are just the same old recycled nonsense people hear and repeat.

Ow-20 oils are fine lubricants, as they are all synthetics and some, like GTMO are quite high in moly which is an excellent antiwear additive. However, 0w-20 was introduced as a way to reduce internal engine loads to eek out a bit more MPG.

A 0w-20 oil at cold startup is considerably more viscous than a 5w-30 is at operating temps. So, are you doing harm to your engine the 1st few miles on a 0w-20 every time you drive it? Of course not.

If you have an engine that's burning a bit of oil, step up 1 viscosity grade. It won't hurt a thing. Viscosity grades are on a spectrum....meaning that each weight has a range it can operate in and still be labeled as that weight. That's measured at 100° C and a signed a number. 30w oils are around 9.3 to 12.5....higher number being heavier.

M1 HM 5/30 comes in at 11.9...darn near a light 40w. That 2.7 will love it. It also likely to help clean out the engine as it's high in detergents as well as reduce consumption

Way ahead of you; I bought two 5-quart jugs of 10W30. I was gonna go with 5W30, but after talking to some friends and relatives who used to be mechanics, it seems like 10W30 is the better choice.

Also, I have a new mechanic and he's 37, and believe it or not upping to 10W30 was my friend Jim's idea and he's in his 70s! My dad and his two brothers also agree on the 10W30.

What type and brand? I'm getting ready to use Valvoline Maxlife synthetic 10w-30 for my next OC.

I guess what STILL concerns me is the presence of oil in the coolant reservoir...

Mobil 1; I've been running Mobile 1 full synthetic in my truck since 84K miles (June 2018).

Actually, my old mechanic is the one who was behind the times; My dad told me I should do what the owner's manual says, but in late 2019 or early 2020 I switched from 0W20 to 5W20 (it says on the oil filler cap that my truck takes either 0W20 or 5W20; I decided to experiment with 5W20). I was going to go with 5W30, but my uncle (62; former mechanic) said I should run 10W30 in the summer and 5W30 in the winter.
